COMMISSION SETS HEARING ON GAS RATE

The Virginia State Corporation Commission has set a public hearing for Dec. 20 on Roanoke Gas' request for a $1.3 million rate increase.

Roanoke Gas filed an application for a rate increase June 15. The request would raise the company's operating revenues by 2.4 percent, the SCC said.

For an average residential customer, using 8,500 cubic feet of gas, the monthly bill would increase by $1.64, from $57.58 to $59.22.

The rate increase becomes effective on an interim basis Nov. 13. If the commission does not approve the entire amount, the difference will be refunded to the company's customers.

This is Roanoke Gas' second rate request in as many years.

On May 18, the SCC approved a $630,000 rate increase for the utility at the recommendation of a commission hearing examiner. The award was slightly more than half of what the company had requested.

The hearing on the latest rate increase request will be held at 10 a.m. in the second-floor courtroom of the commission's headquarters in the Tyler Building at 1300 Main St. in downtown Richmond.

Written comments should be sent to the SCC's clerk in care of the Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond, Va. 23216. All correspondence should refer to case No. PUE940039 and be received by no later than Oct. 31.
