Lewis-Gale earns high accreditation

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded its highest ranking to Lewis-Gale Hospital and to the Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center in Salem.

The commission, which accredits about 80 percent of the nation's 5,300 hospitals, awarded its second-highest ranking to Roanoke Memorial and Community hospitals, according to a spokeswoman.

The higher ranking - accreditation with commendation - was established in 1991, commission spokeswoman Alice Brown said. But the list of hospitals to earn that ranking was not released until this year because the commission wanted to wait until all hospitals had a chance to apply for it. Hospitals are accredited every three years.

The difference between the higher ranking and regular accreditation is like "the difference between a B and an A in school," Brown said. Hospitals that earn a regular accreditation are considered "very fine hospitals" by the commission but did not earn a score of 90 or above on every standard.

To earn the higher ranking, hospitals also must show exemplary performance in quality improvement, patient rights, medication use, practitioner credentialing, safety and organization management, the commission said.

The Illinois-based commission has awarded its highest ranking to approximately 5 percent of hospitals surveyed since the category was established.
