FIRE DEPUTY NEW CHIEF IN HENRICO

Roanoke County Deputy Fire Chief Mark Light has taken a job as fire chief in Henrico County.

He begins work there as head of the Division of Fire on Aug. 10.

"They're getting one of our very best employees," said County Administrator Elmer Hodge. "He's probably one of the most respected and liked staff people we have here."

Henrico County Manager Virgil Hazelett announced the hiring of Light on Monday. He will replace retired Chief John Bowes.

In addition to management in the Fire Department, Hodge said, Light also led staff training.

"He's a young fellow on the way up," he said. "And he realizes that opportunities in the Roanoke Valley are sometimes limited."

Henrico County is starting to incorporate its rescue program into the fire system, something Roanoke County has done.

Light could not be reached for comment.
