HELPING HANDS ACROSS AMERICA is the theme of the 79th Anniversary of the Helping Hand Club of First Baptist Church, 310 N. Jefferson St. A banquet will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Airport Inn to honor Dr. Wendell Butler, chairman of the State Water Control Board; Mary Hackley, director of elementary education for Roanoke schools; and George Lynch, professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Church members to be recognized are Roland Lovelace, Jr., Roanoke City's Spelling Champion; Reginald Reynolds, a graduate of William Fleming High School who has been awarded a four-year scholarship to Coastal Carolina College in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Karim Thompson, an athlete at Northside High School.

THE CRYSTAL SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 2411 Rosalind Ave., will be host to the "Maranatha Touring Choir" on Saturday at a dinner at 5 p.m. and a concert at 7 p.m. The group, consisting of high school and college students from Fredericksburg and surrounding counties, is led by Carlton Onderdonk.

THE FIFTH ANNUAL PICNIC of the United Methodist Church will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. on the patio of the Roanoke United Methodist Home, 1009 Old Country Club Road N.W. Participants are asked to bring salads or desserts.

THE REV. JOHN R. FURMAN was recently installed as minister of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Peters Creek Road. Furman previously served as assistant minister at Arden Presbyterian Church in Asheville, N.C., where his responsibilities included church growth and evangelism.

Furman is a doctoral candidate at Reformed Theological Seminary, where he received a master of divinity degree. He also received a master of arts degree in religious studies from St. Louis University, a bachelor of science degree from Clemson University and an associate's degree from Montreat Anderson College.

"COME ALONG WITH JESUS" will be the theme of St. Paul Lutheran Church's Vacation Bible School for ages 3 through grade 6 on Aug. 1-5 from 9 a.m. until noon. The church is located at 4909 North Lakes Drive. Registration is in progress.

THE FOURTH ECUMENICAL CREATIVE EDUCATION WORKSHOPS will be held Sept. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Salem.

The workshops will be offered to church leaders and people of all ages. The Rev. Dr. Howard Hanchey from the Episcopal Theological Seminary will be talking about "Christian Education Made Fun and Easy."

COLONIAL BIBLE INSTITUTE will start the first semester of its ninth year of Bible study programs Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. The institute is now accepting applications for admissions.

EVELYN CONNER of Salem will be performing a gospel music concert Saturday with The Redeemers from Shawsville at 4 p.m. at Camp Altamons. She will also sing at a gospel music celebration Sunday at 7 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

THE HOMECOMING SERVICE of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 3521 Orange Ave. N.E., will be held Sunday. The morning service will be led by the Rev. Thomas Pleasant and the guest choir at 11 a.m., and lunch will be served at 1 p.m.

The Rev. J.R. Hughes and the choir of Bent Mountain Baptist Church will conduct the 3 p.m service.

THE REV. J. EUGENE YOUNG, pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, will be honored at services tonight, Friday and Dunday for the 12th anniversary of his coming to the church at1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W. Speakers during the specials services include the Revs. Marvin Fields, Adrian Dowell, Lee A. Lewis, Corwin Casey and Antonia Thomas. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today and Friday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
