ELLERTSON, EASTERLY VIE FOR GOLF TITLE

Richmond residents Amy Ellertson and Natalie Easterly took radically different routes Thursday to advance to the finals of the 66th Virginia Women's Amateur at The Homestead resort's Cascades Course in Hot Springs.

Ellertson, a 33-year-old operator of three wine and beer retail stores, won seven of the front-nine holes on her way to an 8-and-6 victory over Sherry Zaleski of Manassas, who did not win a hole.

By contrast, Easterly rallied from a 2-down deficit after 12 for a 1-up victory over Shawn McCullough of Alexandria.

Zaleski, a 1991 finalist, lost the first three holes to Ellertson's two pars and a birdie. She halved the fourth and fifth holes but lost the next four to three pars and a birdie to fall 7-down at the turn. Two halved holes and a victory at the 12th finished off Ellertson's victory.

In the 37th Women's Seniors championship at the resort's Lower Cascades Course, Audrey Najjum of Roanoke and Chris Epperly of Virginia Beach scored 4-and-3 victories in their march to the finals.

Epperly, the Monday qualifying medalist who is playing in her first Seniors championship, led the distance in defeating Betty Hoffman of Williamsburg.

Najjum, who also coasted to her victory over Grace Stillwell of Charlottesville, will be going after her fourth Seniors title. Earlier championships came in 1978, 1980 and 1982.

Among area players:

Meg Gilmer of Charlottesville beat Kathy Dodd of Countryside 6 and 5 in the first flight at the Cascades Course. In the second flight, Donna Faison of Virginia Beach defeated Valeta Pittman of Roanoke Country Club 4 and 3, and Joannah Pattison of Wytheville beat Ann Kite of Waters Edge 3 and 2.

In the first flight of the seniors tournament, Norma Lemon of Covington beat Doris McNeal of Virginia Beach 3 and 2. Susie Rixey of Virginia Beach knocked off Susan Shortridge of Waterfront 1-up on the 20th hole in the second flight. Madeline Hylton of Blacksburg Country Club defeated Frances Dillon of Waterfront 6 and 5 in the third flight. Joann Jacobs of Waters Edge beat Jane Watson of Covington 3 and 1. Evelyn Anderton of Roanoke Country Club won by default.

In other golf in the region:

Tom McKnight of Galax is one of four Virginia golfers chosen to represent the United States in the Biarritz Goodwill match July 26-27 in France.

Allen Barber of Yorktown, the 1992 State Amateur champion, is captain of the team, which also includes Charlie Green of Tazewell and Pat Tallent of Vienna.

The event has been expanded from two to four teams and will include delegations from Spain and California. A team from the Virginia State Golf Association won last year.

Hampton gets OK to join Division I

The NCAA has approved Hampton's request to move from Division II to Division I competition, athletic director Dennis Thomas announced.

Hampton traditionally has competed in the CIAA in Division II. The school petitioned the NCAA in December for Division I status. The Pirates will compete in Division I-AA in football and in Division I in all other sports beginning with the 1995-96 academic year.

Hampton is seeking to form a two-tiered system within the CIAA, ``but for right now, we'll be independent,'' said spokesman LeCounte Conaway. Norfolk State announced this week it also is seeking Division I status.

The NCAA required Hampton to add another women's team to meet Division I standards, and Thomas said the school will establish a women's tennis team this year.

Hampton has men's teams in basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and outdoor track and field. It has women's teams in basketball, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, softball and volleyball.

More than 30 softball teams are expected for the Dudley Men's Major National Invitational Tournament beginning today at the James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

The tournament is one of 15 qualifying legs for the World Series of Slow-pitch Softball in Daytona Beach, Fla., next month.

Local entries include Demolition of Salem and McCoy's Auto of Blacksburg, for which Virginia Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo is a part-time player.

Nine teams are expected in the tournament, which runs through July 24. Major teams feature some players who make a living at slow-pitch softball, and players are not limited by governing-body rules as to how many home runs they can hit per game.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke advanced to the semifinals of the USTA Clay Court tennis tournament for players 14 and under at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hippensteel, seeded No. 2, defeated Jackie Jenkins of College Park, Ga., 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. He will face fifth-seeded David Martin of Tulsa, Okla., in the semifinals today.

In doubles, Hippensteel and partner Andrew Vu of Reston lost to Michael Calkins and Travis Paris 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
