`NYPD BLUE' TOPS EMMY NOMINEES

Crime paid again for producer Steven Bochco when his hard-edged ``NYPD Blue'' received a record 26 Emmy nominations Thursday, surpassing the 21 earned by his cop show ``Hill Street Blues'' in 1981.

Bochco savored the moment - for about a moment - then declared: ``We've got work to do.''

``It was just amazing,'' he said from his Los Angeles home. ``We know we are doing a first-rate show and we knew we would get a share of the nominations, but this is wonderful.''

``NYPD Blue'' was nominated as best drama and earned seven nominations for its cast, including co-stars David Caruso and Dennis Franz. It also swept the five writing categories for a drama series.

``NYPD Blue'' is critically acclaimed and highly rated after one season, but it has been condemned by religious conservatives because of its nudity and raw language. And it's still fighting to get advertisers to pay full rates for commercial time.

Winners of the 46th Annual Emmy Awards will be announced Sept. 11. The nominees and winners are selected by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Jay Leno and David Letterman go head to head in the outstanding variety, music or comedy series category. Besides ``The Tonight Show With Jay Leno'' on NBC and ``Late Show With David Letterman,'' on CBS, the nominees were ``Dennis Miller Live'' on HBO, ``MTV Unplugged'' on MTV and NBC's ``Saturday Night Live.''

Leno poked a little fun at the kitchen-sink category.

``It makes me laugh when it's sort of, you know, you're up against Mother Teresa and the Vatican,'' he said.

Comedy series standouts this year were NBC's ``Seinfeld'' with 12 nominations and newcomer ``Frasier,'' NBC's ``Cheers'' spinoff, with 11. The shows will compete with ABC's ``Home Improvement,'' HBO's ``The Larry Sanders Show'' and NBC's ``Mad About You.''

CBS earned 91 nominations overall. ABC had 73, NBC 66, HBO 34 and PBS 25.

``NYPD Blue'' will compete for best drama series with the syndicated ``Star Trek: The Next Generation,'' NBC's ``Law & Order,'' CBS' ``Northern Exposure'' and ``Picket Fences,'' which won the best drama award last year.

``Hill Street Blues'' earned 21 nominations for the 1980-81 season, a record in a single season for a series. The show won eight Emmys that year.

``Home Improvement'' star Patricia Richardson was nominated as best actress in a comedy series. But Tim Allen, co-star of the No. 1 ABC show, was frozen out because his representatives missed the filing deadline.
