Closing, in addition to the store at Northgate Village Shopping Center in Christiansburg, are stores at Valley View Mall and on Orange Avenue in Roanoke, at Oak Grove Plaza on Electric Road in Roanoke County, and on Washington Avenue in Vinton.
Prescription records will be transferred to the nearest Revco store. The approximately 50 employees affected have been offered jobs at area stores, a Revco spokesman said.
The two chains have considerable overlap in the Roanoke Valley. Closings of some stores had been anticipated.
The situation is just the opposite in the Covington, Radford and Marion markets, where Revco has to sell either the Revco or SupeRx store, according to an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission.
There are so few pharmacies in those communities that the FTC feared if Revco owned two locations in each, higher prices and lower services could result.
Revco has a year in which to complete the sale and cannot buy any similar business in the area for 10 years without FTC approval.
