SALEM MAN KILLED IN CRASH WITH TRUCK

A Salem man was killed Friday when his car drifted across the center line of Virginia 221 near Bent Mountain and was struck by an oncoming truck.

Roanoke County Police Officer W.D. Byrd said Clarence B. Hale, 77, of Clarence Lane was driving south on Bent Mountain Road about 2:45 p.m. when he collided with a bucket truck owned by Stackhouse Inc., a Roanoke construction company.

Byrd said Hale probably was killed almost instantly. Byrd said Hale was not wearing a seat belt. The other driver, Garth Morck of Goodview, was not injured.

The accident occurred on a sharp curve in a narrow, two-lane stretch of the road. Police had traffic blocked in both directions until around 6:30 p.m.

There was no indication that Morck was at fault, Byrd said.
