FORMER ROBB AIDE GETS 30 DAYS FOR TAX EVASION

A former Democratic National Committee official who used to work for U.S. Sen. Charles Robb was sentenced Friday to 30 days in prison for failing to pay federal income taxes from 1988 to 1990.

Bernard V. Craighead, 40, of Alexandria paid $22,600 in back taxes after he was charged in April. Craighead pleaded guilty in May to one misdemeanor count of failing to file a tax return.

Craighead, who managed Robb's 1988 campaign and has provided fund-raising advice to Rep. James Moran, D-Alexandria, expressed regret in U.S. District Court.

``I have taken responsibility for what I have done. I apologize both to the court and to my family and acquaintances,'' he said.

Craighead has been involved in promoting President Clinton's health care plan. He left his job as a congressional liaison for the DNC's health care campaign and now works for a political consulting firm.

Defense attorneys urged Judge Leonie M. Brinkema to delay the start of Craighead's prison term until after the November elections.

She denied the request and ordered Craighead to report Aug. 2.

The judge also fined Craighead $500 and ordered him to perform 200 hours of community service during a one-year probationary period.
