USTA FIELD TAKES SHAPE IN QUALIFYING

The top seed in qualifying advanced Sunday in the $10,000 USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke tennis tournament, while two local players were eliminated. Tournament officials also learned NCAA singles champion Angela Lettiere, who had indicated she would play in Roanoke, found a more lucrative tournament elsewhere and is not in town.

Yoshiko Sasano of Japan, the No.1 seed in the 80-player qualifying tournament, trounced Cara Prupas of Blacksburg 6-0, 6-0 on Sunday in her quest for one of four spots in the 32-player main draw that begins Tuesday at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Qualifying continues today. The main draw begins Wednesday at Hunting Hills.

Roanoke's Raissa Remandaban on Sunday beat Lorna Simmons of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-0 before losing to Sweden's Helen Nilsson 6-0, 6-1. Kirsten Caister-Elim of Richmond, a former William and Mary player, beat Lori Woroschuk of Bluffton, S.C., 6-0, 6-0 and outlasted 10th-seeded Eva Januskova of Canada 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 to stay alive in qualifying.

The main draw includes Katrin Kilsch, younger sister of former top five player Claudia Kohde-Kilsch.

Tickets are $20 for all matches Tuesday through Sunday; $2 for Tuesday only; $3 each day for Wednesday and Thursday; $4 for Friday; and $5 each for Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final.

In other sports in the region:

Ritch's Superior of Windsor Locks, Conn., completed a weekend of high-powered offense by avenging a loss to Convertors-Vernon's of Kinston, N.C., to win the Dudley USSSA Major NIT softball championship at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Ritch's Superior, which hit 219 home runs and batted .722 as a team during the eight-game tournament, beat Convertors-Vernon's 49-46 and 41-35 in the championship round. In the final game, Dirk Androff hit six home runs and tournament most valuable player Britt Hightower was 5-for-7 with four homers for Ritch's Superior.

For the weekend, Hightower was 42-for-49 (.857) with 32 home runs.

Earlier in the day, Convertors-Vernon's ended a 28-game winning streak by Ritch's Superior with a 36-34 victory. Ritch's Superior advanced to the final by beating Steele's/Sunbelt of Cleveland, Ohio, 42-35 in the losers' bracket.

The Roanoke Star under-15 White boys' soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Vildbjerg Cup in Vildbjerg, Denmark, by defeating a team from Gulset, Norway, 2-0. Trevor Plunkett and Ernie Hale scored Roanoke's goals while Ryan Caya earned the shutout in goal. Steve Hamvlen and Adam Maneen provided outstanding defense. Roanoke will take on the East England Boys today.

The Cave Spring American Little League 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars were eliminated from the Virginia Little League All-Star tournament with a 7-3 loss to Virginia Beach in a quarterfinal.

The Salem Suns claimed the championship of the American Softball Association's Class C Fastpitch Tournament in Charlottesville with a 6-3 victory over 257 Grocery of Harrisonburg. The Suns, who went 5-1 during the weekend tournament, already have qualified for the ASA national tournament in September in Midland, Texas, by winning a national qualifier.

Lynda Leffler and Nelson Prillaman defeated Susan Cox and Rob Williamson 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to win the gold medal in mixed doubles tennis for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia at the Crystal Spring courts. In the bronze-medal match, Bonnie Longworth and Randy Dickey beat. Dale Fitzgerald and Tracy Sledd 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In gold-medal matches played during the week, Natalie Bushkar and Mary Thomas defeated Anne Blair-Hanes and Elizabeth Melchionna 6-1, 6-1 to win the girls' 14 doubles, and Nelson Prillaman and Skip Hamilton rallied past Don Fishwick and Bill Haynie 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) to win the men's 35 doubles.

Jason Anderson pitched a one-hit shutout in the first game and had three RBI in the second game as Roanoke Post 3 West beat the New River Yankees 7-0 and 7-5 in American Legion doubleheader in Blacksburg. In addition to striking out 14 in the first game, Anderson had three hits and scored twice. Brian Crosswhite and Sparky Atkinson also had two hits for West (10-6). Anderson and Atkinson each had two hits in the second game and Mark Freeland pitched 41/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.

Roanoke Post 3 South's Robey Caldwell struck out 12 and scattered six hits in a 3-0 shutout of Rocky Mount Post 6 in American Legion baseball. Josh Salmon knocked in two runs with a first-inning single for South (9-5).

Rick Sigmon of Rocky Mount has won the Curtis Turner Memorial Hard Charger Award at New River Valley Speedway for the second consecutive week. The veteran driver gained nine positions in the 100-lap NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race Saturday night, winning the award for the second time this year.
