DESHAZO HAS SURGERY ON SHOULDER

Virginia Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo had surgery Tuesday to relieve pain in his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Tech's team surgeon, Marc Siegel, performed the procedure at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg and said DeShazo will be ready for the beginning of preseason drills Aug.11.

The pain is believed to be related to an injury DeShazo suffered last season.

DeShazo, the Big East Football Conference's top returning quarterback, threw for 2,080 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season as Tech went 9-3 with a Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl victory.

Non-conference home games against Richmond (Dec.5) and VMI (Dec.10) and games at North Carolina State (Nov.30) and Virginia Commonwealth (Feb.1) are among the highlights of the Radford University men's basketball schedule for 1994-95.

The Highlanders open at home on Nov.26 against Catholic and play four of their next five games at the Dedmon Center. The only road contest in that span is a visit to N.C. State.

Other non-conference opponents for Radford are Centenary (Nov.28), Glenville State (Dec.3) and Widener (Dec.17) at home and Stetson (Dec.20) and Middle Tennessee State (Dec.29) on the road. After playing a 16-game Big South Conference schedule, the Highlanders will participate in the league tournament March 2-5 at Liberty University's Vines Center in Lynchburg.

Frankie Pennington was disqualified as the winner of the Late Model Stock Car feature race at Franklin County Speedway Saturday night. Inspector Glenn Reed ruled Tuesday that the head in Pennington's Ford was undersized. The victory was awarded to Rodney Cundiff.

In Crewe, the Cave Spring Dixie Pony Tails softball team will play for the state title at 7 today after defeating Amherst 7-6.

Stacy Sain went the distance on the mound and Kelly Foy made a game-saving catch at the fence in the fifth inning for Cave Spring, which came through the losers' bracket. The teams will meet again for the title.
