THIRD SEED ELIMINATED IN USTA PLAY

Unseeded Keiko Nagatomi of Japan bounced third-seeded Karin Miller from the $10,000 USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke tennis tournament at Hunting Hills Country Club Tuesday.

Miller lost 6-1, 6-1 in first round main draw play. Fourth-seeded Emily Bond of England also lost, to Amanda Augustus of Palos Verdes, Calif. 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5. Eighth-seeded Lorna Woodroffe of England was eliminated by Japan's Nao Akahori 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

First-round winners included seventh-seeded Jo Ward of England, 6-1, 6-1 over Stacey Martin of Largo, Md.; sixth-seeded Petra Gaspar of Hungary, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 over Madoka Kuki of Japan; Kristin Sanderson of Pinellas Park, Fla., 6-1, 6-3 over Tonya Evans of Philadelphia; and Paloma Collantes of Jackson, Miss., 6-2, 6-4 over Miho Saeki of Japan.

Qualifying winners Tuesday were Jody Yin of Madison, N.J. over Jackie Moe of Edina, Minn. 7-5, 6-2; Kelly Pace of Montgomery, Ala. over Jennifer Callen of Concord, Mass. 6-2, 6-1; Tara Snyder of Wichita, Kan. over Aarthi Venkatesan of Tampa, Fla. 6-3, 6-4; and Lucie Ludvigova of Czech Republic over Anne Covert of Austin, Texas 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Second-seeded Kristina Brandi of Bradenton, Fla., defeated Namibia's Elizma Nortje 6-0, 6-1.

Second-round main draw matches continue today at Hunting Hills. Tickets for the day's play are $3 and can be purchased at the gate. The feature match pits Kelly Pace against Celeste Contin.
