TOP SEED WINS USTA MATCH

Top-seeded Claudine Toleafoa of Belgium advanced Wednesday in the $10,000 U.S. Tennis Association Women's Circuit of Roanoke tournament and plays today for a chance to move into the quarterfinal round.

Toleafoa beat Jackie Moe of Edina, Minn., 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday. Today, she faces qualifier Lucie Ludvigova of the Czech Republic in an afternoon match at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Fifth-seeded Gail Biggs of Australia lost to Tara Snyder 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday in the only other match involving a seeded player.

Play continues today, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hunting Hills, with several seeded players in action. Sixth-seeded Petra Gaspar of Hungary plays Kristin Sanderson of Pinellas Park, Fla.; second-seeded Kristina Brandi of Bradenton, Fla., plays Jennifer Callen of Concord, Mass., a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Germany's Katrin Kilsch; and seventh-seeded Jo Ward of England faces Yoshiko Sasano of Japan, a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Kim Grant of South Africa.

At 6 p.m., qualifier Aarthi Venkatesan of Tampa, Fla., who beat Varalee Sureephong of Haines City, Fla. 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday, is featured against Amanda Augustus of Palos Verdes, Calif.
