NRVS ACTION TO BE TELEVISED

The biggest event at New River Valley Speedway since the track opened in 1988 will take place tonight when WDBJ-TV televises the action live from 9 until 11:30 p.m.

Jim Shaver, vice president of news and operations for Channel 7, said that all of the station's air personalities will be involved along with 25 in the production crew. In addition, Jimmy Hensley, Winston Cup star from Horsepasture, will be on hand to assist Mike Stevens, sports director, with the color commentary from the broadcast booth.

The WDBJ-TV 7 200 will feature a 100-lap Late Model Stock Car race and then a 35-lap Limited Sportsman before returning for the second LMSC event. Top finishers in the first LMSC event will be inverted to start the second race. Two other races, 25-lappers for the Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will be held prior to 9 p.m.

Gates will open at 2 with the first practice at 4. Time trials get underway at 6:15, with the first race at 8. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

A full night of festivities is planned at Franklin County Speedway tonight, as the track celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The ninth annual All Pro Auto Parts ``Road to Charlotte'' 300 will include professional wrestling, a hot dog eating contest, free rides in race cars for kids, and special racing.

FCS will stage its third Taylor Select race of the season, in which Late Models will run three heats of 50, 50 and 20 laps. Gates open at noon, and racing starts at 8. Tickets are $5 for adults and children 10-and-under are admitted free.

Rocky Mount Post 6 eliminated Roanoke Post 3 South 10-7 on Friday night at Rocky Mount in the first round of the American Legion Blue Ridge District Northern Division baseball tournament.

Larry Bowles (5-1) got the victory, allowing five hits, striking out 10 and walking eight in seven innings.

The Vinton Sluggers won the Dixie Bells 13-15 state softball tournament at Bedford by defeating District 6 champion Powhatan 5-0 in the final. Sluggers starting pitcher Jodi Stuckey went five innings, allowing only one hit. Carrie Doupnik pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Sluggers advance to the World Series in Waverly, Tenn. Their first game is Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. against the North Carolina state champion.

Keith Bryant pitched a four-hitter as Roanoke North pounded Tri-County 17-2 in a Northern Division American Legion tournament game Thursday night. Bryant struck out five and walked three.

Mark Freeland allowed four hits and two unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings and struck out five to lead Post 3 West to a 5-2 victory over the New River Yankees at Salem High School in the first round of the American Legion Northern Division tournament.
