ALMOND, Claudia Belle, 94, of the Carriage Hill Retirement Center, Bedford, and formerly of Vallentine Road, S. W., Roanoke, died Sunday, July 31, 1994. She was born in Pittsylvania County July 7, 1900, a daughter of the late Ernest T. Jacobs and Nannie Belle Huffman Jacobs. She was the widow of George Griffith Almond and a member of Belmont Christian Church, Roanoke, for over 50 years. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia B. Goode, Bedford; two brothers, Gorman Jacobs, Vinton, and Emmett L. Jacobs, Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Elsie) Blair, Gretna, and Mrs. Vance (Reva) Flick, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Patricia G. Satterfield, Richmond and W. David Goode III, Cody, Wyomin g; also three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belmont Christian Church, Roanoke, with Pastor W. Michael Barnes officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Liberty Christian Church Cemetery in the Sandy Level area of Franklin County. Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford is handling arrangements. CAMPBELL, William Douglas, (``Doug""), 40, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 31, 1994, following a lengthy illness. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Shenandoah Bible College. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Campbell. Doug is survived by his mother, Pearl J. Campbell; his beloved grandmother, Mrs. Lewis L. (Estelle) Turner, Roanoke; his aunt and uncle, Mary Ann and Ralph Ratliff, Roanoke; and a special great-aunt, Carlise Brown of New Jersey. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 1994 at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel, by the Rev. Danny Wright, with burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

ELLIOTT, Peggy Elizabeth Lovern, 54, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, July 31, 1994, at Radford Community Hospital. Mrs. Elliott was born in Montgomery County on July 19, 1940, and was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Bland Lovern. Survivors include her husband, Rodrick S. Elliott; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jay Shorter, Radford; one son, Christopher R. Elliott, Blacksburg; one granddaughter, Renee Christina Elliott, Blacksburg; two grandsons, Christopher and Devin Shorter, Radford; her father, Harless Lovern, Blacksburg; three sisters, Shirley Price, Nancy Thompson both of Blacksburg, Christine Rice, Blue Ridge; two brothers, Randall Lovern, Eddie Lovern both of Blacksburg; special friends Lehonna Pendergrass, Blacksburg, Louise Saville and fami ly, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 1994, at New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Rhinesmith officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. HANN, Herman Harold, 83, of Salem, died Sunday, July 31, 1994 at his home. He was retired from ITT. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ona Shumate Hann, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas J. Hann, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rudy J. and Carolyn K. Hann, Salem; special granddaughter and her husband, Jeri Hann and Channey D. Wilson, Beaufort, S. C.; brothers-in-law and wives, Arnold and Ellen Shumate, Lawrence and Gay Poff, all of Salem. Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 2, 1994, at 10 a.m. in the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. R. Stuart Carlton officiating. Interment in Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel after 11 a.m. Monday.

HATCHER, Teddy T., 63, of Salem, died Saturday, July 30, 1994, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Fisher Hatcher. He retired from the U. S. Army after serving 21 years and later retired from Richfield Retirement Community. He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Hatcher Sr. and his fiance, Sandra Gearheart, Rodney G. Hatcher; one daughter and son-in-law, Wendy S. and James W. Poore; four grandsons, Michael J. Hatcher Jr., James L. Poore, Anthony L. Poore all of Salem; Rodney G. Hatcher Jr. of Michigan; one granddaughter, Joni L. Poore of Salem; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Cayin Martinez of Chicago; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Graveside service noon Tuesday, August 2, 1994, at the Hatcher-Clark Cemetery in Dunns, W.Va. with the Rev. Gary Sheppard officiating. PATTERSON, Bernice Ott, 83, of Roanoke, died Sunday, July 31, 1994. She was the widow of Jacob F. Patterson and is survived by her daughter, Barbara J. Bowling, Roanoke; son, Jacob Franklin Patterson of Texas; six granddaughters; nine great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; one sister; and two nieces. Memorial services will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 1994 at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel by the Rev. Arthur E. Grant. The family will receive friends after the service at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

REID, Wisteria, (``Virginia''), 70, of Route 3, Martinsville, died Friday, July 29, 1994. Funeral service 2 p .m. Tuesday, Mt. Olive East Christian Church. Arrangements by Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home.

SIMPSON, Col. John Page Jr., of Lexington, died Saturday, July 30, 1994 in a Buena Vista Nursing Home. He was born in Norfolk, Va., August 25, 1906, the son of the late John P. and Fannie Ives Simpson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lt. Col. Maribeth Turnbull Simpson. A 1928 graduate of VMI, he was Cadet Captain of his class. Following graduation, he taught ``Rat Math"" at VMI and then attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1934 to 1941, he was President of Eastern Wood Corporation in Norfol k, Va. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army as Assistant Military Attache at the U. S. Embassy in London. For this service, His Majesty, King George VI, awarded him Honorary Membership in the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He also spent a year each as briefing officer for General George Marshall and General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He retired in 1968 from the National Security Agency, having served four years as NSA representative to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jean Roseberry, York, Pa., Burwell Meade Fasciano, Reading, Ma.; one son, John Page Simpson III, Annapolis, Md.; one brother, Howard J. Simpson, Norfolk; and eight grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery by Chaplin James Park. Arrangements by Lomax Funeral Home.

SMYTHERS, Dorothy Sexton, of Salem died Sunday, July 31, 1994. She is survived by her husband, H. Miles Smythers. She is also survived by her children, Pamela Bastable, Jerry Sexton, Becky Duncan, Steve Sexton; seven grandchildren and two stepchildren, Lyle and Helen Smythers. Other survivors include three sisters and one brother. Mrs. Smythers was a member of the Fort Lewis Chapter, DAR. Sh e had been a member of First United Methodist Church, Salem, Va. for forty-five years where many lasting friendships were sealed and lasted through the years. After the untimely death of her husband, Ernest Sexton, Mrs. Smythers entered the business world and was office manager for Days Construction Company and Gardner-Smith, Inc. for the next twenty-three years where she enjoyed many relationships with members of the local construction circles. While never considering herself an expert, she was an enthusiastic golfer at Roanoke Country Club and any other course as the occasion arose. She also loved the game of bridge and considered members of several clubs as her dearest friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 1994, at the First United Methodist Church, Salem with Rev. Thomas L. Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. SUTPHIN, Almeda Williams Creasey, 78, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, July 30, 1994, in Richfield Nursing Center. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday from the First Church of God on Canaan Road in Christianburg with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
