In order to prepare parents and children for the start of school at the end of August, area schools are holding informative meetings and ORIENTATIONS.
Elementary Schools
Shawsville Elementary School: Kindergarten orientation is Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.; first through fifth grade orientation is Aug. 25 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Riner Elementary School: open house is Aug. 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; individual grade level meetings will be held in September.
Falling Branch Elementary School: kindergarten parents and pupils may tour the school on Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m., orientation will follow at 7 p.m.; pupils in first through fifth grades may visit with teachers Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Kipps Elementary School open house is Sunday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. The school's Parent Teacher Association will begin its membership drive at the open house. The membership fee is $5 for families and $3 for individuals. For more information, call Laura Wedin at 951-8168.
Sports Teams
Auburn High School varsity and junior varsity football practice begins Monday, Aug. 8. from 6 to 10 p.m.
The Shawsville High School football team will hold an informative meeting Tuesday, Aug. 9 in the high school auditorium. Football practice begins Monday, Aug. 15 at 8 a.m.
The eighth grade football program at Christiansburg Middle School is holding a meeting for players and parents on Aug. 11 in the middle school gym. Practice will begin on Monday, Aug. 15 at 8 a.m.
The Blacksburg High School football program will hold a meeting for players, managers and student trainers on Wednesday, Aug. 3 in the health room of the high school at 6:30 p.m. An informative meeting for parents of football players will be held in the high school auditorium Thursday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The Blacksburg Middle School football team will hold an organizational meeting for parents and players on Wednesday, Aug 10 at 7 p.m. at the middle school. practice will start Thursday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m.
NANCY KENT, a science teacher at Dublin Middle School, has been selected to be an instructor at the Lead Teacher Summer Institute of the Virginia Quality Education in Sciences and Technology initiative at Hollins College for the second year.
The initiative helps teachers emphasize concept understanding and problem-solving skills in their delivery of math and science to students.
Kent will help train eighty science and math teachers from around the state.
MELISSA WHITTIER and CHRISTINE SMITH, 1994 Blacksburg High School graduates, won gold star awards in the volunteer action event at the national leadership meeting of the Future Homemakers of America in Orlando, Fla.
The two graduates presented a program entitled "Dramatic Play in the Lives of Young Children," that they have provided as a workshop to child care centers throughout the state.
The Parent Resource Centers of Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and the city of Radford will present a free program on SPECIAL EDUCATION in the New River Valley on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Christiansburg Elementary School. "Understanding Special Education" will teach parents to help with their child's special education program and explain rules and regulations of special education and what each county has to offer.

The Henry Clay Masonic Lodge No. 280 will prepare free IDENTIFICATION BOOKLETS at the New River Valley Fairgrounds in Dublin on Tuesday Aug. 2, Friday Aug. 5, and Saturday Aug. 6. The booklets will include fingerprints, photographs, and personal information to help identify children in case of an emergency. The services will be available from noon to 9 p.m. on Aug 2. and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 6.
The Virginia Commission for the Arts has announced a program that will provide GRANTS of up to $300 to elementary or secondary teachers for art programs in the classroom.
The Teacher Incentive Grant program, designed to integrate arts into the general curriculum will fund programs that incorporate architecture, creative writing, dance, music, theater or film.
