Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., Louisville, Ky., parent of Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem and Medical Care America Inc. of Dallas, said Monday it has called a Sept. 1 meeting of Medical Care shareholders to vote on the proposed merger of the two companies.

Columbia/HCA and Medical Care also said they received a limited request for additional information from the Federal Trade Commission regarding two specific markets on July 29. The companies intend to respond to the request as promptly as practicable. The specific markets affected were not disclosed.

Awful Arthur's opens on market

Awful Arthur's Seafood Co., opened Monday evening at 108 Campbell Ave. S.E. at the Roanoke City Market. The new restaurant is at a location where two previous eateries, the Blue Muse and Lone Star Cantina, have been attempted in recent years.

Awful Arthur's advertises fresh seafood and the atmosphere of a casual beach party.

Fazoli's Italian Restaurants, a Lexington, Ky., quick-service Italian-food chain, will open its first Virginia store Thursday at 105 Laurel St., Christiansburg. The restaurant, which offers dine-in, carryout and drive-through service, features pasta dishes, pizza, salads, garlic breadsticks and desserts. The company operates and franchises about 70 units in Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri.

Coal production ahead of last year's

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production totaled 19.5 million tons in the week ending July 23, up 1 percent from 17.6 million tons the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 17.1 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Domestic coal production so far this year is about 575 million tons, 1 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.
