Cooking school for single diners

Lone cooks can vacation in Florida while studying the dynamics of making meals for one diner. Jane Doerfer, longtime cooking instructor, cookbook author and publisher of "Going Solo," a five-year-old newsletter for people traveling alone, has combined her experiences into a school.

In intimate 4 1/2-day participatory sessions aimed at the average cook, students prepare and sample a blend of healthful, quick-to-fix recipes and learn about planning, storage, shopping and recycling meals for one. The study is in is a renovated 19th century plantation house.

"Lancelot" auditions Saturday

Auditions will be held Saturday for parts in Joyce G. Kernodle's play ``Looking for Lancelot,'' Sept. 23-25 at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.

\ "A Few Good Men' opening Thursday

Mill Mountain Theatre will stage ``A Few Good Men'' Thursday through Aug. 28 on its Main Stage in Roanoke's Center in the Square.

The contemporary courtroom drama by Aaron Sorkin opened on Broadway in 1989. It was made into the feature-length movie starring Tom Cruise. For ticket information, call the box office at 342-5740.

LaLeche League celebration Saturday

The La Leche League of Roanoke will celebrate ``the art of breastfeeding'' and ``the art of parenting'' Saturday from noon to 3 at ArtVenture in Center in the Square. ArtVenture is on the second floor of the Art Museum of Western Virginia, on the Church Avenue side, in Roanoke.

Mamet dram at Barter Playhouse

ABINGDON - A controversial play about a college student who accuses her professor of sexual harassment is playing at the Barter Playhouse through Aug. 28.

``Oleanna,'' by David Mamet, was first produced in 1992 in the wake of Anita Hill's sexual harassment claims concerning Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

In the play, a failing student requests a conference with her middle-aged professor and later charges him with sexual harassment. ``Oleanna'' contains adult situations and explicit language and is recommended for adult audiences.

Exhibit features 1800s paintings

The Art Museum of Western Virginia will hold an opening reception for its newest exhibit ``The American Spirit: 19th-Century Masterpieces From the Masco Collection'' on Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The reception will be in the museum's first floor gallery in Roanoke's Center in the Square.

In the collection are classic paintings from the 1800s, including one of the best-known historical images in American art, Archibald Willard's ``The Spirit of '76.'' This painting shows the Revolutionary War fife and drummers. The exhibit will hang through Oct. 16.

An exhibit lecture series has also been scheduled. The two lectures, both at 11 a.m., will be in the first floor gallery. On Sept. 13, William Whitwell, a professor at Hollins College, will present ``Themes and Ideas in Landscape Painting.'' On Oct. 5, Virginia Tech assistant professor Bailey Van Hook will discuss ``Women in 19th-Century American Art.''

Art museum has new endowment

The Art Museum of Western Virginia has established an endowment in the name of the late Roanoke artist John Will Creasy. The endowment will fund art education, programs and activities promoting the arts.
