RADFORD - An open house will be held Saturday, Aug.6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Military Affiliate Radio System station at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
MARS is an organization of licensed amateur radio operators who work with military stations to provide auxiliary communications between military, civil and disaster officials during emergencies. MARS affiliate stations also provide telecommunications and relay messages between overseas U.S. military personnel and their families.

Public forum planned
BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Planning and Engineering Department will hold a public forum Aug.16 at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Municipal Building. Issues and problems of the town's Central Residential District and Central Business District will be discussed.
The districts include the section of town from the intersection of North Main and Progress streets to the intersection of South Main and Miller streets. The forum will provide information on the historical land use changes in the area and results from neighborhood studies and interviews.
Participants will help develop a vision and a series of recommended actions for the area.
