DOMINICAN REPUBLIC PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED

President Joaquin Balaguer was declared winner Tuesday of the May election, which critics said was riddled with fraud.

Opposition candidate Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, the former mayor of Santo Domingo, has called for new elections next May.

He has charged that as many as 200,000 Dominicans were prevented from voting because their names were missing from voter lists posted at polling stations. Balaguer has conceded there was some fraud.
