OAKTON BOY LEADS JUNIOR GOLF EVENT

G.W. Cable, 17, of Oakton has a five-stroke lead after two days of the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Championship at Blacksburg Country Club.

After Tuesday's round, Cable has a two-day total of 7-under 137 heading into today's final round. Warsaw's Troy Thorne and Verona's Chip Glover trail at 142.

Among local golfers, Christiansburg's Ben Kitts is eight back at 145; Roanoke's Jason Orlando and Salem's Nick Varney are 11 back at 148.

In other sports in the region:

Three golfers turned in scores of 1-under-par 71 to share the first-round lead of the 54-hole ClubCorp Junior Players Championship at Hot Springs.

Lucas Glover of Greenville, S.C., Charlie Chen of La Quinta, Calif., and Brent Roof of Conway, S.C., led a field of 119 on the Homestead resort's par-72, 6,619-yard Lower Cascades course.

At stake is the American Junior Golf Association's Robert H. Dedman trophy, which will be awarded after Thursday's final round.

Glover and Chen are in the 13-14 year division. Roof is in the 15-16 year division. Chip Zahn of Mandeville, La., in the 15-16 division, is alone at par-72.

Among Virginia players, Brandon Lacroix of Roanoke shot a 41-38-79, Mark Baldwin of Roanoke shot 41-38-79, Jason Sibley of Clifton had a 42-40-82 and Yong Joo of Annandale recorded a 44-42-86.

Sam Wilke had a grand slam and Brandon Welch added a three-run home run to power the Vinton Nationals past Dinwiddie 11-5 in the Dixie Youth Major League (11-12) state tournament at South Boston.

Vinton plays South Hill today in a semifinal game. The winner will play for state championship on Thursday.
