Youth baseball and softball have finished or are almost finished. Adult summer softball and volleyball are wrapping up their regular seasons as well.
But that also means the time is coming for other sports like football and fall volleyball and softball.
Plus there still is enough summer left for a few more sports camps and outings in the wilderness.
SULTANS OF SWAT: CHAD GILMORE doubled and scored the decisive run as First Christian edged LPE (Lutherans/Presbyterians/Episcopals) 11-10 in eight innings in the regular season finale in the Radford Church League.
The victory gave First Christian (13-2) the league title. It also extended First Christian's winning streak to 13 games.
KENNY COX singled to bring home Gilmore and DOUG BARTON with the tying and winning runs capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Gilmore finished the game 4-for-4 with four runs scored and five runs batted in. He led the game with a home run and added a two-run, inside-the-park homer later.
MIKE SHANK went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI to lead LPE.
LPE (11-4) scored three runs to tie the game at 7 in the seventh inning and three more to take a 10-7 lead in the eighth.
The two teams have the top seed in the post-season tournament. The finals in the double-elimination tournament are scheduled for Aug. 16.
SERVES AND SPIKE SET: Sugar and Spikes (21-2-1) has rolled off 12 straight wins and now holds a four-game edge in the Blacksburg Women's Summer Volleyball League.
