HIPPENSTEEL JAPAN-BOUND

Roanoke tennis player K.J. Hippensteel is one of three male players chosen to represent the United States at the NTT Junior Team Tennis tournament this month in Yamanakako, Japan.

Sally Etterbeek, coordinator of junior player services for the U.S. Tennis Association, said selections are made based on match results for the year, meaning Hippensteel's results place him among the top three 14-under players in the nation.

The tournament is played on artificial grass from Aug. 24-28.

The six-player U.S. team - three boys and three girls - leaves Aug. 18 for Japan. Two players play singles, and the third is part of a doubles team. Who plays where won't be decided until later this week, Etterbeek said. ``We just find it to be an excellent developmental program, helping to get [our players] international experience,'' Etterbeek said.
