MCCUMBER TO TEE OFF IN ROANOKE ON SEPT. 27

Mark McCumber, winner of last month's Anheuser-Busch Classic in Williamsburg, will be the guest professional for the 13th Tee-Off for Sight tournament to be held Sept.27 at Hunting Hills.

The eight-time winner on the PGA Tour will play 18 holes and conduct a clinic for players, sponsors and spectators.

Tournament chairman Mike Warner said the tournament attracted McCumber through Hunting Hills member Mike Sassard, who grew up and played a lot of junior golf with McCumber in Jacksonville, Fla.

``I believe Mark was the best man in Mike's wedding,'' Warner said. ``That's how we made the connection.''

McCumber, 42, follows such acts as Fuzzy Zoeller, Peter Jacobsen, Johnny Miller, Tom Kite, Curtis Strange and Chi Chi Rodriguez to Hunting Hills.

``It's very difficult to keep getting better each year, especially with our limitations on funds,'' said Glen ``Roby'' Roberson, Hunting Hills' head pro. ``I think we could get Jack Nicklaus to come, but it would break the bank.``

McCumber's Anheuser-Busch victory ended a five-year winless streak dating to the 1989 Western Open. He has won eight times since joining the PGA Tour in 1978. His most notable victory was the 1988 Players Championship.

McCumber, who ranks 27th on this season PGA Tour money list with $373,742, has won more than $3.6 million since joining the tour in 1979. He is a two-time member of the U.S. World Cup and Ryder Cup teams. McCumber also has a golf course design company that he operates with his brothers.

After a morning brunch with players and sponsors, McCumber will tee off at 10:45 a.m. for his round with champions from 10 area clubs. He will play six holes with each group of champions.

The tournament, sponsored for the first time by APB Whiting Oil Co., will benefit the Virginia Affiliate of the National Society to Prevent Blindness. In 12 years, proceeds have exceeded $190,000.

Entry fee is $125 per player, $500 per team. A field of 100 players will shoot for $3,000 in prizes.

Tickets for the tournament and 5 p.m. clinic will be $5 in advance, $7 at the gate. Advance tickets will go on sale Sept. 1 at the Hunting Hills' golf shop.
