THE CATHOLIC PRO-LIFE FOUNDATION of the Blue Ridge has awarded several prizes to Roanoke Catholic School students in its annual essay and poster contest. In the essay division, Audrey Dickson of Salem took third place and won a $50 scholarship. Anthony Dickson of Salem and Brendan McCarthy of Roanoke won honorable mention.
In the poster contest, Ryan Stroud of Roanoke took first place and won a $75 scholarship while Regina Garza, also a Roanoker, placed second and won a $50 scholarship.
Students winning honorable mentions in the poster competition included Christine Pendarvis, Courtney Campbell, Fielding Fitzpatrick, Erika Metz and Christina Coleman, all of Roanoke.
The contest encourages youth to express their convictions against abortion.
THE REV. DR. DONALD H. ROBERTS has begun his ministry at South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Roberts, 46, has come from a four-year pastorate at Walker Chapel United Methodist Church in Arlington. Reared in the Hampton area, he is married to the former Polly Sheffield and has two daughters, Amanda of Richmond and Susannah, a ninth-grader. The pastor, who has an interest in medical chaplaincy, has served churches in Halifax, Lottsburg, and Grafton as well as Arlington. Educated at Lynchburg College, Duke Divinity School and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Roberts was ordained an elder in 1975.
WINDSOR HILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH has received the Rev. Bryan D. Oldham, 27, as its associate pastor. Married to the former Ruth Wells of Falls Church, he is a recent graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Oldham, whose duties at Windsor Hills will include supervision of education and youth activities, took his undergraduate study at James Madison University. He is from Fairfax.

CAVE SPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH has 20 youth participating this week in an Appalachian Service Project in Mingo County, W.Va. The youth have raised funds for the trip in which they are working in homes of needy residents.

Michelle Brown, 19, a sophomore at Bridgewater College and a member of Oak Grove Church, has returned from a 10-day mission service trip to Aqua Zarca, Honduras. She was part of a team of 15 that helps build masonry homes for villagers.

GERALD MCDERMOTT, a professor of religion at Roanoke College, is the author of "What Jonathan Edwards Can Teach Us About Politics," an article in the July 18 issue of the evangelical Christian magazine, "Christianity Today." McDermott is the author of a book on Edwards as well as "Living With Cancer" in cooperation with Dr. William Fintel.
