CITIZENS' Q&A

TODAY'S TOPIC: TRUST FUNDS

What is your position on using trust funds, such as Social Security and highway trust funds, for deficit reduction?

- Donald Ayers, Hillsville

COLEMAN: "If this is a question of how to use the funds, I believe taxes levied for specific purposes, such as Social Security and highway construction, should not be siphoned off for other purposes. If this is a budget question: Counting Social Security and gasoline taxes as revenues in a unified budget hides the true extent of our deficit spending, which I believe is misleading to the American people."

NORTH: "I oppose using trust funds for deficit reduction. We need to protect these funds for the purposes for which they were set up. We need to reduce federal spending, reduce regulations and taxes, and provide incentives for a healthy economy (which will bring in more tax revenues) in order to reduce the deficit."

ROBB: "Federal trust funds were established for specific purposes, and the money in those accounts should be sacrosanct, and I have introduced and supported measures to reduce the deficit by cutting other spending. I also oppose the practice of using trust funds to mask the true size of our federal deficits, and I have co-sponsored and voted for legislation to end that practice."

WILDER: "I strongly oppose the use of trust funds for general-fund purposes. Social Security taxes must be used solely for providing benefits and for preparing for future benefits. To do otherwise is to break trust with the American people. All federal gasoline taxes should be spent on maintaining our transportation infrastructure."
