RICHMOND - A trust established to pay injured users of the Dalkon Shield birth-control device has been bombarded with records from claimants who waited until the last minute to document their medical problems.
Monday was the deadline for women who sought compensation to submit materials backing up their claims to the Dalkon Shield trust fund, said Michael Sheppard, the trust's executive director.
The deluge of medical records came from many of the approximately 6,000 women who met an April 1986 deadline for filing claims but had not provided documentation.

Blue crab catch dips; bushel prices rise
For the second time in three years, Virginia's blue crab catch is looking slim, and retail prices for bushels of crab have risen as much as 40 percent.
Watermen have turned to crabbing as the Chesapeake Bay's other mainstays - oysters, shad, rockfish, herring and perch - have declined because of disease, pollution and overfishing.
About 2,400 commercial fishermen have crabbing licenses, up 41 percent since 1980.

Toll road sought to reduce backups
Seeking to cut down on the time it takes to get to the Outer Banks, Virginia and North Carolina officials are asking the federal government to help build a toll road.
The $1-a-car road would help reduce traffic between Interstate 64 in Chesapeake and the North Carolina state line, proponents said. Especially on summer weekends, traffic slows or stops on parts of the route most travelers use.
About eight of every 10 beachgoers are from Virginia, according to the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.
