MAILBOX SMASHERS WON'T BE PUNISHED

Two of the three 18-year-old men sentenced to 90 days in jail and fined $500 each for smashing mailboxes in Wythe County in March have gotten the penalties set aside on appeal.

Authorities decided not to prosecute the mailbox vandalism charges against Shane M. Carrico of Max Meadows this week in Wythe County Circuit Court. The charges against Wes A. Hill of Austinville were taken under advisement for one year. Carrico and Hill had appealed their General District Court convictions to the Circuit Court.

Steven L. Moore of Austinville is scheduled to have his appeal heard Aug. 23.

A 17-year-old Max Meadows juvenile also was charged after mailboxes in the Fort Chiswell area were damaged March 13.
