BOENS, Bertha Sowder, 78, of Narrows, Va., died Thursday evening, August 6, 1994. She was born in Montgomery County on February 1, 1916 and was the daughter of the late Otha and Beulah Shelor Sowder. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubry E. Boens and 3 brothers, George Sowder, Ernest Sowder and Joe Sowder. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows and was a former school teacher in Montgomery County School System. She is survived by a son, E. Bernard Boens, Shawsville, VA; 3 daughters, Nancy B. Lloyd, Narrows, Linda B. Clevinger, Decatur, Al, Eleanor A. Boens, Richmond, Va.; 4 brothers, Otis Sowder, Christiansburg, Va., David Sowder, Midlothian, Va., Jimmy Sowder, Mechanicsville, VA., Charlie Sowder, Salem. Va; 3 Sisters, Blanche Anderson, Oconomowoc, Wi, Mary Madison and Janie Hale, both of Roanoke; 3 grandsons, George Lloyd, Dale Lloyd, and John Clevinger. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Narrows, with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows, VA. BROWN, Jeffrey Carlis, 34, of Newark, N.J., departed this life on Wednesday, August 3, 1994 at the home of his mother in Decatur, Ga. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Shelby Brown LeGarde, Deactur, Ga.; father and stepmother, Henry and Virginia Brown, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hopson, Roanoke; sister, Pamela M. Brown, Decatur, Ga.; two half brothers, John Brown, Atlanta, Ga., and Harold Brown, Newark, N.J., one step-brother, Justin, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; special friends, Dallas Lee, Midlothian, Va., Rev. Alton Henry, Powell, Ohio, and Alden Austin, Newark, N.J.; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. COLE, Glendon Virginia Moore, 84, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, August 4, 1994, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Covington on February 28, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Long and Nettie Sullivan Long. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Henry A. Moore, Sr. and Hunter M. Cole. Survivors include two daughters, Louise Virginia Painter, Buena Vista and Clara (Pat) Coffey, Roanoke; five sons, Henry A. Moore, Jr., Buena Vista, Charles L. Moore, Sr., Lexington, Robert L. Moore, Martinsville, Douglas E. Moore, Chesterfield and Glenn (Steve) Moore, Staunton; two sisters, Thelma Tingler, Covington, Garnett Mayo, Natural Bridge Station; twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren; three stepchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p .m. on Sunday, August 7, 1994, with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. DALTON, Cleston, 78, of Willis, passed away Thursday, August 4, 1994, at Twin County Community Hospital, Galax. He was born December 23, 1915, in Carroll County, Va., the son of Jayhue Dalton and Lona Okie Goad Dalton. He is survived by his mother, Lona Goad Dalton, Willis; two brothers and sister-in-law, E. Clemance and Elva Dalton, Wytheville, Convern E. Dalton, Wytheville; three sisters, Zesta and Burgoyne Wade, Willis, I. Rheda and Arthur Lee Wheeler, Narrows, V. Ivalene and Calvin D. FERGUSON, Maggie Cash, 88, of Vinton, died Thursday, August 4, 1994, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Ernest E. Ferguson, and was also preceded in death by two grandchildren. She was a member of Vinton Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Lucy F. Johnson, Nancy F. Jordan, both of Blue Ridge, and Betty F. and George O. Wandell, Oxford, N.C.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene R. Ferguson, Troutville, Irene M. Ferguson, Roanoke, Ralph E. and Jackie W. Ferguson, Roanoke, David L. and Betty J. Ferguson, Moneta, Paul C. and Mary Jo Ferguson, Laguna Hills, Calif., Grover W. and Sue H. Ferguson, Montgomery, Texas; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren. FINCH, John Early Sr., 58, of Troutville, formerly of New Castle, died Thursday, August 4, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca S. Finch, Troutville; his mother, Florine F. Jones, Emporia; one son, John E. Finch Jr., Buchanan; two daughters, Sabrina L. Finch, Troutville, Mary K. Bowman, Vinton; one brother, Thomas S. Finch, Richmond; grandson, William Cody Finch. HALE, Pollyanna Pozniko, 73, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, August 4, 1994. A former Virginia Tech University Professor, Mrs. Hale was born on June 16, 1921 in Sanilac County, Michigan to Michael and Marie Hrebenikov Pozniko. She grew up near Youngstown, Ohio, where she graduated from North Lima High School. She received a four year scholarship to Kent State University, where she graduated with a BS degree in education. She later attended Ohio State University, where she received a MS degree in Botany. She married Maynard G. Hale on October 15, 1943. They moved to Blacksburg in 1951. Mrs. Hale initiated a Russian language program at Virginia Tech, where she taught Russian grammar and literature to freshmen through senior students for twenty-seven years. She was a positive influence in the lives of many students. She was an active member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, especially in the area of Youth Christian education and was the first woman elected as an elder. She was a member of the Gamma Sigma Delta Honors Education Sorority, the American Association of University Wemen, and several book clubs. She was an associate member of Sigma Xi, and belonged to the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Hale was also an advisor to the Russian Club and often shared her home for meetings. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, John, Michael and Peter Pozniko, two sisters, Anna Pozniko and Sophie Pozniko Ginn. She is survived by her husband, Maynard G. Hale, Blacksburg; her daughter, Patricia Hale Lyden; her son-in-law, John M. Lyden; and her grandson, Matthew Patrick Lyden, all of Vinton; her son, Arthur Lynn Hale; her daughter-in-law, Francis C. Hale, Alburquerque, N. M.; nieces, nephews; and many friends. The funeral will be Monday, August 8, 1994 at 11 a.m. in the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. The Rev. D. HALL, Margaret Gravely, 83, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, August 4, 1994. She was a retired computer analyst for the Federal National Guard. Born to the late William Marshall Gravely and Sarah Gray Gravely. She was the widow of Ira Ace Hall. Surviving is a son, Parker G. Price of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Dorothy G. Long, Charleston, S.C., Rosalie Bacot Bell, Huntington, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Rosalie E. Moody and Diana Gray Cortese both of Charleston, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Alexandra Moody, Peter Moody, Michael Cortese. Olivia Cortese. HUFFMAN, Leona Martha Bland,, 76, of Newport, died Friday, August 5, 1994. She was a loyal member of the Gravel Hill Christian Church. Our loss is Heaven's gain. She devoted her entire life to loving and caring for her family. She will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard P. Huffman, one brother, Rev. Charles S. Bland Jr., her sister, Elizabeth B. Lovern. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty H. Estes, Shelby H. and Allen L. Bradford, Carolyn H. and Jim Harris, all of Newport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie H. and Jeanette Huffman, New Castle, Bobby P. and Mary Huffman, Newport; five grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-gran dson. Also surviving is one sister, Catherine Kelly, Eggleston; one half sister; and three half brothers. Funeral services will be held at the Gravel Hill Christian Church, with the Rev. HUGHETT, Kathleen Surratt, 83, of Rt. 1 Robinson Tract Rd., Pulaski, died Thursday, August 4, 1994 at her home. Born June 17, 1911 in Kimball, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late, Stephen Floyd Surratt and Hattie Bond Surratt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Carl Hughett Sr.; a son, Arthur Clay Hughett; two brothers, Stanley Surratt and James A. Surratt. She is survived by three sons, Hubert Carl Hughett Jr., Dallas, Texas, Stephen Lee Hughett, Burleson, Texas, James D. (Jim) Hughett, Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters, Alice Largen, Ruby Bell, Pherba Pulliam, Violet Surratt, Georgia Hendricks, all of Pulaski; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren. JOHNSON, Gladys Hopkins, 89, of Narrows, died Friday, August 5, 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harless B. (Zip) Johnson and a daughter, Joann Hopkins Johnson. She was a lifelong resident of Narrows and a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Harless B. (Benny) Johnson Jr. and Jeanette W. Johnson; two grandsons, Michael W. Johnson and Harless B. (Ben) Johnson III; three great-granddaughters; a brother, James Edward Hopkins. McDANIEL, Raymond L., 62, of Catawba died Thursday, August 4, 1994, in a Salem hospital. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Dodd McDaniel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Wayne Barrett of Roanoke, Debbie and Jerry Shelor, Carolyn and Kenneth Scott both of Catawba; six brothers, Loyd McDaniel of Lynchburg, Roy McDaniel of Roanoke, Clyde McDaniel of Dickson, Texas, Jerry McDaniel of Danville, Harold McDaniel of Salem, Richard McDaniel of Rosedale; three sisters, Kathleen Rhodes, Isabelle Lucado both of Roanoke, Edna West, Troutville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. MORRIS, Reba Tibbs, 86, a resident of Kegler Manor in Bastian, Va. died Thursday, August 4, 1994, in a Bluefield, W.Va. hospital. She was born in Bland County, Va. the daughter of the late Mezappa C. and Margaret Groseclose Tibbs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd C. Morris, Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Geneva Summerford of Tybee Island, Ga.; five sons, Cloyd Crockett Morris of Waverly, Va., Sammy C. Morris of Bluefield, W.Va., William Ross Morris of Bedford, Va., Robert C. Morris of Roanoke, Rev. Randy Morris of Galax, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Beulah Newberry of Bland; one brother, Ray Tibbs of Bastian, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Wesendonck Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Long, the Rev. Ted Anders, and the Rev. Earnie Chinault officiating. MOW, Baxter Merrill 102, of 3828 Bryant Street, Loris, S.C. died Sunday, July 31, 1994, in the Loris Extended Care Facility after an illness. Born in Argos, Indiana, Mr. Mow was the son of the late Aaron Issac Mow and the late Nettie Baxter. Mr. Mow was a Seminary Professor as well as a preacher and held the degree of Doctor of Divinity. Mr. Mow at the time of his death was the oldest living Rhodes Scholar. Mr. Mow was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Surviving are one son, Mr. Joesph Mow of Buckhannon, West Virginia and one daughter, Mrs. Lois Snavely of Loris, S.C.; 19 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 14, 1994, at 3 p.m. at the First Church of the Brethren, Carroll and 20th Street, Roanoke, Virginia. Rev. Paul Alwine will officiate the service. RAMSEY, Melvin Thomas, 71, of Rt 1 Box 88, Raphine, died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 1994, in a local nursing home. He was born on September 15, 1922, in Lofton, a son of the late William Lee and Serena Belle (Anderson) Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was a charter member of Pines Chapel. He was also a member of Masonic Augusta Lodge No. 111 for 46 years and served as Past Master. He was an outstanding baseball player with the Augusta County Leagues in his youth. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Before retirement, he was a telegraph operator and station agent on the Shenandoah Division of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad for forty-six years. He was a charter member of the Railroad Association Club where he served as secretary and a member of the VFW Post No. 8279 of Steeles Tavern. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Naomi (Fitzgerald) Ramsey to whom he was married for forty-three years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Lee and Peggy Ramsey of Buchanan and David Scott and Donna Ramsey of Afton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Leigh and Joseph E. Yeager of Waynesboro; two brothers, Luther E. Ramsey and Ricahrd L. Ramsey both of Roanoke; two grandsons, Christian Lee Ramsey and Matthew T. Ramsey; two granddaughters, Emily Yeager and Rachel Yeager and a favorite aunt, Miss Alma Ramsey of Lofton. A service celebrating the life of Melvin T. Ramsey will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Robert D. Goshorn and Rev. Clifford D. Caldwell after which time the family will receive friends. Burial was private.

SHANKS, Ida B., 68, of Rt. 1, Ferrum, who departed life on this earth Thursday, August 4, 1994, at Franklin Memorial Hospital to have eternal life with her Father in Heaven, where she will know the peace that passeth understanding. Services will be held on Monday, August 8, at Flora Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harold Draper and Rev. Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke. SIGERICH, Joseph Nicholas Sr., 72, of Salem, died Thursday, August 4, 1994 in Lewis Gale Hospital. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and had resided in Salem for many years. He was a retired Quality Control supervisor with Eaton-Yale, with 44 years service. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where he also enjoyed his involvement in the AHEPA at the church. He was a Navy WWII veteran, serving on the USS Lexington in the South Pacific and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1264 in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Rose Sigerich. Survivors include his wife, Loraine Betty Sigerich; son and his fiancee, Joseph Nicholas Sigerich Jr. and Lisa Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Darlene J. and Joseph Barta; two grandchildren, Joseph M. Barta and Daniel J. Barta; a brother, Walter Sigerich; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 8, 1994 in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Nicholas G. Bacalis officiating. Burial will follow in the Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the John M. VAUGHAN, Christine Virginia Jones, 85, of Roanoke, formerly of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, August 5, 1994 at her home. She was an active member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and the Women's Circle and was a past member of the American Red Cross Blood Donor Program. She is survived by her husband, M. D. WILLIAMS, Mary Lou, 51, of Buena Vista, died Friday, August 5, 1994, at her home. She was born June 17, 1943 in Buena Vista, daughter of Robert H. and Dorothy Lynn Williams. She was a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder. She was a teacher for the Rockbridge County School System for 29 years. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maggie and Kelly Flint of Wilson, N.C.; her mother, Dorothy Lynn Williams of Buena Vista; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert E. and Frances M. Williams; and a very special friend, Phyllis Moore of Buena Vista. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Marc Sherrod officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service from 7 until 8 p.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450 or Buena Vista Presbyterian Church.
