MAN, 64, SHOT; WIFE CHARGED

A 64-year-old Wythe County man was in stable condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after being shot twice Thursday. Authorities said his wife has admitted shooting him, but said she fired in self-defense.

Berlin King was shot once in the back and once in the chest, said Lt. Doug King of the Sheriff's Office, but was able to telephone the office for help.

Betty Fields King, 60, has been charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
