Heironimus opens new store today

Heironimus today opens a new department store in the Market Place retail complex in Christiansburg. The 40,000-square-foot store, announced in September, replaces the Roanoke chain's 25,000-square-foot store in Blacksburg's University Mall.

The store will feature expanded selections of women's and men's clothing and adds a children's department. Heironimus is a division of the Dunlap Co. of Fort Worth, Texas.

Bankruptcy Court receives 2 petitions

Two bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke.

Jessco Trucking Inc., trading as TJ&R Trucking in Big Rock, is seeking protection from creditors during liquidation. The company listed assets of $26,000 and liabilities of $117,775.

Cox Electrical Contractors Inc. of Bristol filed for liquidation, listing assets of $46,614 and liabilities of $329,918.

Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill. parent of Carter Machinery Co. of Salem, said shareholders Friday approved a 2-for-1 stock split of the outstanding shares of the company's common stock. The split becomes effective for stockholders of record as of the close of business on Tuesday, the company said.

Thor Inc., a Roanoke general contracting and engineering firm, has been awarded a $3 million contract renovation of three buildings at Virginia Military Institute. Thor also has received a contract for a 23,000-square-foot addition to Chesapeake Packaging Co.'s plant in Roanoke, valued at $450,000, and a $436,000 contract for a new roof and interior renovations at the Lincoln Terrace administration building in Roanoke. Robert A. Staton of Lynchburg is architect for the VMI project and Marsh Whitt Associates designed the Lincoln Terrace project.

Paul Oh, vice president of sales for Optical Cable Corp. of Roanoke, is author of a book recently published in South Korea. The book, "Fiber Optics - Main Player in the Information Superhighway," is to be used as a reference in Korean schools and universities, he said.
