Akzo Nobel NV, Dutch-Swedish chemicals and coatings maker and parent of Akzo-Reliance Coatings of Roanoke, reported second-quarter net income of 288 million Dutch guilders, a 32 percent increase over year-earlier resuilts of 217 million guilders. Per-share earnings were 4.05 guilders, compared with 3.06 guilders. Sales rose to 5.56 billion guilders from year-earlier 5.27 billion guilders.
For the first six months, net income was 569 million guilders, or 8.01 guilders per share, compared with 433 million guiilders, or 6.10 per share. Sales were 11.34 billion guilders, up from 10.58 billion. Dutch guilders traded at about 56 cents in U.S. currency this week.
Flowers Industries
Flowers Industries Inc., Thomasville, Ga., baker operating retail and distribution facilities in Roanoke, reported net income of $29.5 million, or 80 cents per share, for its fiscal year ended July 2. That compares with year-earlier $39.2 million, or $1.07 per share. Sales were $989.8 million, up from $962.1 million. Fourth-quarter net income was $9.3 million, or 25 cents per share, down from $17.6 million, or 47 cents. Sales were $316.5 million against $320.2 million.
Brad Ragan
Brad Ragan Inc., Charlotte, N.C., retread tire producer and retailer with stores in the Roanoke Valley, reported second-quarter net income of $2.4 million, or $1 per share, down from $2.6 million, or $1.12 a year earlier. Revenues were $66.3 million compared with $66.8 million. For the first half, net income was $2.4 million, or $1.04 a share, compared with year-earlier $981,000, or $1.02 per share. Revenues were $118.7 million, up from $117.6 million.
Pulaski Furniture
Pulaski Furniture Corp., Pulaski manufacturer, reported net income of $319,000, or 11 cents per share, for its third quarter ended July 10. That compares with $168,000, or 6 cents, a year earlier. Sales were $27.7 million, up from $27.2 million. For the first nine months, net income was $1.9 million, or 80 cents per share, compared with year-earlier $1.6 million, or 55 cents per share. Sales were $92.7 million, up from $87.4 million.
