POST 3 NORTH EVENS LEGION TOURNAMENT

Chris Carr gave up four hits and struck out nine in seven innings Friday as Roanoke Post 3 North defeated Danville Post 325 17-1 in the second game of the Blue Ridge District American Legion baseball tournament at Salem Municipal Field.

Carr (7-0) also went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.

Mike McGwire led Roanoke at the plate with a home run, two singles and two RBI. Jeff Woodford went 4-for-5 with a double and three singles and C.D. Polumbo got six RBI off two singles and a fielder's choice.

The next game of the best two-of-three series will be tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Market Garden in Danville. The winner will advance to the state tournament in Hopewell Aug.10.

A victory by Dinwiddie on Thursday night gave the Vinton Nationals a share of second place in the Dixie Youth Major League baseball tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds.

Dinwiddie defeated South Hill 7-3 for the championship.

Vinton finished as one of three teams with one loss in the tournament. Vinton lost 5-4 to South Hill on Wednesday night.

In Chattanooga, Tenn., Brandy Bailey rode great fielding plays by Jamie Walthall, Clara Austin and Megan Hubbard to a no-hitter as the Roanoke Valley Stars beat Sarasota, Fla., 4-1 in the second round of the 10-and-under division at the Girls' Fast-Pitch Softball World Series. Roanoke will play Miami in a winners' bracket game today.

The Net-Hackers, a USTA 3.5 women's tennis team from the Roanoke Valley, won two matches Friday to reach the semifinals of the USTA Virginia District Championships at the Fairfax Racquet Club.

In their first match, the Roanokers defeated Richmond Weekday No.2 4-1. Jean Peck won her singles match, and Mary Mayrosh lost. Desi Taylor and Bettina Altizer teamed for a doubles victory, as did Betty Branch and Brenda Grepiotis and Edna Brubaker and Becky Dickerson.

In their second match, the Net-Hackers defeated Northern Virginia Indoor No.2 5-0. Peck and Pam Leaberry won in singles, Taylor and Atizer won in doubles, as did Branch and Lee Bond-Sevigny and Sally Foy and Dickerson.

Today the Roanoke team, which was 10-0 in league play, will play Northern Virginia Outdoor at 9 a.m.
