ATKINS, Claude Ellis, (``Scrooge""), 75, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 5, 1994. He was retired from John W. Hancock Jr., Inc., after several years of service. Surviving are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Marvin E. and Nancy Trail Atkins, Colonial Heights, Roger L. Atkins, William R. (Bobby) Atkins, both of Roanoke; five grandsons, Todd E. Atkins, Travis Atkins, Roger Lynn Atkins, Matthew W. Atkins, John Robert (Robby) Atkins; a sister, Gertie Gray, Danville; two brothers, Norman W. Atkins, Will O. Atkins, both of Roanoke. Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m., Monday, August 8, 1994, in Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Michael Conn officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

BALDWIN, Dan D., 61, of Galax, passed away Friday at Twin County Community Hospital, Galax. He was born December 14, 1932 in Grayson County, the Summerfield Community to John William and Hattie Mae Thomas Baldwin. He was Chairman of Nautilus International, Past Chairman of Twin County Airport Commission, member of Galax Moose Lodge, member of Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726, member of Summ erfield United Methodist Church, and honorary member of Independence Rescue Squad. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Halsey Baldwin; two daughters, Jeanne Lilley, Rebecca Dellinger, both of Dover, Pa.; two brothers, Oscar Reid Baldwin, Havre-de-Grace, Md., Gailen Baldwin, Elk Creek; two sisters, Dixie Waibel, Manassas, Dollie LeMasson, Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two special nieces, Amy and Emily Halsey, both of Mouth of Wilson. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence with the Rev. Ted Bartlett, the Rev. Hal Eaton and the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment will be in Summerfield Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726. DAY, Mae Bell, 93, of Roanoke, previously of Ocala and Umatilla, Fla., passed away Wednesday, July 27, 1994. Mae Bell had lived the last two years with her granddaughter, Margaret J. Umstead and great-grandson, Justin B. Umstead in Roanoke. She recently enjoyed a visit with grandson, William E. Shuler, Ocala, Fla.; and a quiet, 93rd birthday celebration on June 29, 1994. with Margaret and Justin at Richfield Nursing Center in Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Crowe M. Day in 1954 and their daughter, Elsa Mae Shuler in 1991. In addition, she leaves a son, Charles Day, Lombard, Ill.; granddaughters, Diane Hill, Livingston, N.J. and S. Clark, Marietta, Ga.; and four great-grandchildren, Kathleen and Frankie Hill, James Allen and Stephanie S. Clark. Funeral services were held. Saturday, July 30, 1994, in Eustis, Fla. She was a much loved, much missed, and always to be remembered grandmo ther. Until we meet again, may God hold her in the palm of his hand.

DOBBINS, Stella S., 96, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 5, 1994. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. Her husband, Minter A. Dobbins, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert H. and Hazel Dobbins, Roanoke, Minter A. and Kay Dobbins, Buena Park, Calif.; two daughters, Virginia Smith, Phoenix, Ariz., Rosalie Bowling, Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Lois Smith, Phoenix, Ariz., Saundra Simpson, Buena Vista, Debbie Lane, Roanoke, Jimmie Bowling, Gaston, S.C., Melanie Towarnicki, Jeana Barlow, Teana O'Cull, all of California; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie Murray, Jason Lane, both of Roanoke, Kris and Lindsay Bowling, both of South Carolina; several more great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who live in California. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's North Chapel 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 1994, with the Rev. Wayne C. Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Oakey's North Chapel.

DURHAM, Rick Trent, 39, of Rockbridge County, died August 5, 1994, in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. He was born May 12, 1955 in Lexington, son of Mae Donald Durham of Rt. 5, Lexington, and the late Broadus Francis Durham. Rick moved to Tennessee in 1975 to attend Tennessee State University, where he studied Medicine and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. He also attended the University of Virginia, and studied Paramedical and Emergency Services. In 1981, he moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. to work in I.C.U. and Emergency in a local hospital until 1988. He also worked in the states of Tennessee, Oregon, California, North Carolina, Virginia and several Indian reservations in Arizona, specializing in emergency room and critical care. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by three sisters, Laura Durham Metzger, Linda Durham Trimble, and Debra Durham Riley; and five brothers, Donald Francis Durham, Walter Lee Durham, Robert Steven Durham, Gregory Ruff Durham and Julian Walsh Durham. Pastor Hunter Phillips will conduct a memorial service at the Lexington Foursquare Gospel Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 1994. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fellowship Hall in the Lexington Foursquare Gospel Church from 1 to 2 p.m. A private burial service will take place at the family cemetery following the memorial service. DUTY, Engram Lovas, 79, of Dublin, passed away Friday, August 5, 1994 at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. He was a retired employee for the City of Alexandria, Va., a member of the Dublin Baptist Church, and he was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in WWII. Survivors include his wife, Julia Bolden Duty of Dublin; adopted daughter, Mrs. Betty Lou Haire of Stafford; three grandchildren, Becky Ruby of Stafford, Cheryl Kehl of Cincinnati, Oh, Michael Haire of Stafford; two great-grandchildren, Erica Haire and Kevin Kehl. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 8, 1994 at 2 p.m. at the Dublin Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

HUNT, Lucille Allman, 67, of Penhook, passed away Friday, August 5, 1994 in the local hospital. She was a member of Forrest Hill Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Allman and is survived by her husband, J. W. Hunt, Penhook; five sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Pattie Hunt, Union Hall, Ted and Ann Hunt, Anderson, S. C., Steve and Brenda Hunt, Penhook, Keith and Debbie Hunt, Penhook, Kevin and Candis Hunt, Union Hall; one daughter, Kimberly Hunt, Penhook and her fiance, Don Davis, Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren, Heather, Whitney, Cathy, Neal, Beth, Tyler, Kyle, Heidi and Holly Hunt; also one brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny E. MITTEL, D. Brent, 40, of Roanoke, formerly of East Prospect, Penn., passed away Friday, August 5, 1994, due to a highway construction accident in Roanoke County. He was employed with Lanford Brothers Co. Inc. as superintendent since 1987. He was a graduate of York Vocational Technical School. He is survived by his wife, Shonna Holtzinger Mittel; sons, Travis Zane Mittel, Aaron Dale Mittel; his parents, Joan Shelly and Dale Eugene Mittel; sisters, Anita Mittel Haugh, Shelly Mittel Miller, Elizabeth Joan Mittel; grandmother, Ivy Dellinger Mittel. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Monday, August 8, 1994 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. W. M. Anthony Layman officiating. Interment will follow at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. PALMER, Agnes Hardie, 92, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 5, 1994, in a local nursing home. Mrs. Palmer was a retired nurse, having worked in Reno, Nev. After retiring, she moved to Roanoke. Surviving are her brother, Elmer Hardie; sister, Alice Robertson, both of Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. James Millsaps officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

SMITH, Annie Williams, 96, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, August 6, 1994, in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd P. Smith and parents, Milton A. and Lillie Dickerson Williams. She was a much loved retired first grade teacher at Floyd Elementary School. She is survived by a nephew, F. Douglas Clement, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, F. Pat & Nancy Smith of Check; daughter, Margaret Smith of Martinsville and Floyd; two grandsons, Scott Smith of Check, David Smith of Roanoke; sister, Marie C. Williams of Floyd; nieces, Virginia Williams and Mrs. Leslie Carver of Richmond. Funeral service will be Monday, August 8, 1994, at 11 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. STANLEY, David Richard Lee, 71, of Route 4, Bedford, passed away on Friday, August 5, 1994 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 8, 1923 in Bedford County, a son of the late Albert Stanley and Irene Stanley. Twice married, his first wife was the late Ollie Stevens Stanley. He was retired from Rubatex with 45 years service, was a Marine Corps veteran, a member of Melrose Avenue Christian Church, V.F.W. Peaks of Otter Post 2157, B.P.O.E. Elks #321, Lynchburg Moose Lodge #1727 and The National Rifle Association. He is survived by his present wife, Helen Akers Stanley; four sons, William Stanley, Wayne Stanley, Ray Stanley, all of Bedford, Richard Stanley, Smith Mountain Lake; one daughter, Genny S. Humphreys, Roanoke; one brother, Warren Stanley, North Carolina; three sisters, Rachel Newman, Bedford, Ruth Palmer, North Carolina, and Naomi Ashwell, Huddleston. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 8, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with the Revs. Terry Willis and Bob Maas officiating.
