PENNINGTON ROLLS TO ANOTHER WIN

It was a big day for Rockbridge County in auto racing circles Saturday.

Natives - and comrades - Rick Mast and Frankie Pennington captured the poles and led the opening laps of their respective races: Mast at the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis, and Pennington at Franklin County Speedway's 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature.

Pennington's good fortune lasted longer than that of his friend, as he led the entire way and won his second consecutive race.

It's been quite a month for Pennington, as he has been first across the finish line in four consecutive races. He was disqualified during inspection on July 23, but the other wins have held up.

"My car ran real tight tonight," Pennington said, forecasting a strong finish in the remaining races at FCS this season. "I think I'm going to do even better next week."

Pennington opened up a commanding lead on several occasions, but a series of five caution periods allowed the field to catch up.

Points leader Dudley Lawhorn finished second, and Carl Dadian placed third.

"I qualified third, and finished third," Dadian said. "I'm happy with that."

Ten-time winner Rodney "Six-Pack" Cundiff and Harvey Harrison were fourth and fifth, respectively.

In other races Saturday night:

Chad Hodges weathered four yellow flags and won the Rookie race. Mike Roberts, second in points, was second in the race, while points leader James Hunt was third.

Hunt has yet to win a race this year, but he consistently has finished in the top three.

Points leader Mike Dudley again prevailed in the Street Stock division. Pole-sitter and early leader Mike Elkins rallied to overtake Leon Dalton on the final turn for second.

Mini Stock dominator Steve Lam won for the 18th time in 21 tries this year. James Cox and Carlton Clark, driving twin Mustangs, finished second and third.

Pure stock pole-sitter Jay Peery led for 23 laps, but division points leader Red Hartman won the race. Peery was second, with Greg Tester third.

Tommy Hall outlasted Teddy Lawless to win the 10-lap Truck race.

The Any Car race was not completed by press time.
