NORTH: THE LATEST DEMAGOGUE

Isn't it wonderful when times get tough there always seems to arise a charismatic demagogue with the skill to articulate the chronic carpers in our midst - Father Coughlin, Joe McCarthy, Rush Limbaugh, Cal(amity) Thomas. And now comes Ollie North, who never told a lie that wasn't a good one. Look at him, the Johnny Appleseed of PACs, raise money all over the country to impel our li'l ole Virginia election down the far right way. If the election is not bought by the money Ollie is raising, it won't be because the price was too high.

Now I must get back to my job of putting up all those "Keep Right" signs proliferating along our highways. You thought maybe it was VDOT?

With Boucher, we pay and pay

It amazes me when I hear Rep. Rick Boucher claim he is fighting for the 9th [Congressional District]. All I see Mr. Boucher doing is taxing the 9th. Mr. Boucher is toting the typical liberal tax and spend policies of Bill Clinton. On Aug. 5, 1993, Boucher voted with Bill Clinton for one of the largest tax increases in our history. On May 1, 1990 he voted for a tax increase bill that would raise your taxes by over $3,485 in five years. Then, in March of 1993, Mr. Boucher voted for Bill Clinton's $16.3 billion pork-barrel spending package.

Mr. Boucher then wasted our hard-earned tax dollars on pornographic trash from the National Endowment for the Arts. He voted to send millions of our tax dollars to fish research in Arkansas and parking garages in New Jersey. I think the 9th's money can be spent more wisely. Mr. Boucher is wasting our hard-earned tax dollars with Bill Clinton's liberal tax-and-spend policies. We need a congressman who will fight for the 9th. Steve Fast, the Republican candidate for Congress, believes that our hard-working families do not need more taxes.

Radford Police grateful for help

The Radford Police Department would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who supported our project that won third place in the national 1993 Chiefs' Challenge. The challenge is sponsored by the Department of Transportation's Highway Traffic Safety Administration to achieve a higher safety-belt use.

Special appreciation is extended to: Commonwealth Press, P.F.S., the Foto Factory and the R & R Market. These businesses posted public service messages: First National Bank of Christiansburg, Blue Ridge Bank, Arby's, Cedar Valley General Store, Best Western Radford Inn, Pak & Sak Food Market, Central Lumber Co., Super 8 Motel.

The support we received is an excellent example of the public and private sectors working together to make Radford a safer place to live.
