K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke won his opening match Sunday in the U.S. Tennis Association Boys' 14 and Under National Tennis Championships at San Antonio, Texas.

Hippensteel, seeded second in the 128-player draw, defeated Oliver Shoo of Princeton Junction, N.J., 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. In the second round, Hippensteel plays Mario Alvarex of Miami, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over John Kowalski of Carlsbad, N.M.

Hippensteel also won his opening doubles match. He and Phillip Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., won their first match by default, then defeated brothers Jerry and Leslie Joseph of Rock Hill, S.C., 6-0, 6-4.

In other sports in the region:

Ross Blankenship had four RBI and Blake Davis and Josh Durham knocked in two runs to lead the Vinton All-Stars past Tennessee 9-4 in the Dixie Youth Majors 13-14 World Series at Eufaula, Ala. Chris Manning was the winning pitcher. Vinton, which lost to Florida 11-7 on Saturday, will play either Georgia or host Eufaula today at 5 p.m.

Mississippi pounded the Vinton All-Stars 12-2 in the Dixie Youth 15-16 World Series at Avon Park, Fla. Justin Arrington and Brian Jones had RBI for Vinton, which is 1-1 in the tournament and will play Tennessee at 4 p.m. today

Acadia of Covington defeated Stix of Vinton 23-5 in five innings to win the Virginia USSSA Western Division Class D Area state softball championship at the Arnold Burton Complex. Acadia first baseman Timmy Harris was voted the tournament's most valuable player. Gold's Gym of Roanoke was third, the Innkeeper of Danville fourth.

Roanoke Post 3 North outslugged Danville Post 325 to win the Blue Ridge District American Legion baseball tournament 17-15 Saturday night in Danville.

Post 3 North overcame five Danville home runs to advance to the state tournament beginning Wednesday in Hopewell. In the first round, Post 3 North will play Poquoson at 1 p.m. Poquoson defeated Williamsburg 7-2 to win the District 7 tournament.

Winning pitcher Al Holland Jr. slugged a three-run home run in the first inning to get Post 3 North started. Mike McGuire had four hits and drove in three, and C.D. Columbo added three hits and three RBI.

Post 3 North used four big innings to build its lead, scoring four runs in the first and eighth innings and added three-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Omar Venable and Mike Martin each belted two homers for Danville.

Holland pitched the last five innings, giving up eight runs and striking out four. Post 3 North rapped 19 hits off five Danville pitchers.

The Roanoke Gators women's swimming team finished fifth overall at the National Long-Course YMCA Championships, which ended late Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

Several Gators finished in the top 16 to earn All-America status.

On the final day, Lauren Feldman was fifth in 59.62 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle. In the 200 backstroke, Brooke Adams was third in 2:23.21, Carolyn Bucher was fourth in 2:24.41 and Brooke Fonder was 10th in 2:29.30. In the women's 1,600, Jamie Spradlin was 13th in 18:26.21 and Emily Wichard was 16th in 18:34.45. The 400 freestyle relay team of Feldman, Bucher, Adam and Miranda Deputy finished third in 4:05.71.

David Barton of Bee was awarded the victory in the 100-lap Enduro race at New River Valley Speedway on Sunday.

Barton had finished second but apparent winner Dean Sutphin was disqualified for having an altered suspension.

Ironically, Barton also won the first-ever Enduro at NRVS in May on a disqualification.

Jackie Gilbert finished second, followed by Stacy VanOver, Darrell Haynes and Brian Spangler.

In the 50-lap Pure Stock race, Davis Phillips of Plum Creek was awarded the win after apparent winner Grump Wills was disqualified. Willis' engine had after-market valves, which are not allowed in the division.

The disqualification moved Sam Sayers to second and Robbie Cundiff to third.

Wills also had his victory Saturday night taken away because his engine builder equipped the car with the wrong parts.

That made a winner out of Tommy Allie of Christiansburg and moved Cundiff to second and Phillips to third.

Gene Duncan of Radford won the 25-lap Mini Stock race. It was Duncan's fifth win in a row and ninth this season. Jay McCray was second and Randy Bell third.

Tony Howell of Christiansburg passed K.J. Bishop on the last lap to win the 25-lap Modified Mini Stock race late Saturday night. Tim Maiden was third.

Randy Ratliff of Grundy has been selected winner of the Curtis Turner Memorial Hard Charger Award for his performance in the first of two WDBJ-TV 7 Late Model Stock Car races at New River Valley Speedway.

Ratliff finished sixth in both of the 100-lap events but was constantly challenging the front-runners during the first event. As the 17th weekly award winner, he received a plaque from Ms. Bunny Turner, widow of the racing legend, during a ceremony Saturday night.

The initial annual award honoree will be selected from the list of weekly winners at the end of the season. A cash award of $1,000 and a trophy will be presented during the speedway's annual banquet in January. R.B. Duncan of Heritage Buick, Olds, Pontiac, GMC is the award sponsor.
