GEAR, Arthur Jr., (``Bill''), 68, of Roanoke, died Sunday, August 7, 1994, in a local hospital. Mr. Gear was a Army veteran of World War II, retired from Norfolk & Southern with over 40 years of service, and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a 47 year member of the Otterbein Masonic Lodge #561 AF & AM, Otterbein, Indiana. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Gear, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, James and Sally Gear, Roanoke; daughter, Candy Mees, Novato, Calif.; three grandchildren, Evan Gear, Meggie Gear, and Kit Mees; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence (Velma) Dill; and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin (Jean) Martin, all of Indiana); two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Gear, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gear, all of Indiana; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Mark A. Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park with Masonic Grave Rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Oakey's South Chapel.

Clemmons, Roanoke; three sisters, Donna Bucchi, Hagerstown, Md., Ruth Phipps, Morrisville, Pa., Dolly Lester, Bluefield, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 10, 1994, 2 p.m. at the Rader Troutville Chapel with the Rev. John Oyler officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. HELEMS, Mearl Dallas Sr., 78, of Paint Bank, died Sunday, August 7, 1994 in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem. He was born January 29, 1916 in Craig County. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Tingler Helems, Paint Bank; one son, Mearl Davis Helems Jr., New Castle; one daughter, Mrs. S. G. (Myrtle Ann) Zimmerman, Roanoke; four grandchildren; three brothers, Eugene Helems, Arnold Helems, and Hale Helems, all of New Castle; one sister, Mrs. Roxy Abbott, New Castle; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Helems was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Jamison Helems in 1981. Funeral services 4 p.m. Tuesday in Maple Grove Christian Church, in Paint Bank, with the Rev. Ernie Johnson officiating, assisted by Mr. Cody Taylor. Interment will follow in Paint Bank Community Cemetery.
