LYNCHBURG SPOILS NIGHT FOR SALEM, 2-1

Jason Abramavicius threw the ball well for the Salem Buccaneers. If he had made a tough catch, all may have ended well.

Abramavicius mishandled a high toss from first baseman Jon Farrell while covering the bag in the fifth inning Monday night to let the eventual winning run score in a 2-1 Carolina League loss to the Lynchburg Red Sox at City Stadium.

That spoiled an otherwise fine night for Abramavicius (3-7), who allowed four hits in seven innings. Two of those hits came in the fifth, when Greg Patton singled and John Graham doubled off the right-field wall.

Dan LeVangie hit a dribbler toward first that Farrell picked up and flipped to Abramavicius, who was charged with an error. Patton had scored easily on the roller and Graham came home after the error.

In the fifth, Jason Kendall singled with one out, moved to third on Jake Austin's ground-rule double and scored on Danny Clyburn's base hit up the middle. Jay Cranford bounced into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Salem had runners on second and third with two out in the seventh inning but reliever Gettys Glaze fanned Lou Collier. Cranford led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on a Reed Secrist groundout for the second out. Glaze caught Jeff Conger looking to end the game.

Chance Sanford had two hits for Salem. Patton had two of Lynchburg's four hits.

Red Sox starter Thad Rowland (2-0) allowed five hits and one run through six innings to win the 1 hour, 56 minute game.
