PROGRAM HELPS TEENS HELP TEENS|

Four members of Christiansburg High School's Teens Need Teens peer counseling group attended the 10th annual Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Program at Longwood College in Farmville.

The program's workshops helped hone the counselors' skills in leadership, team building and conflict resolution and provided information on cultural diversity, drugs, alcohol and AIDS.

Nathan Brewbaker, Jay Clark, Stacy Neel and April Orange represented Christiansburg High School at the conference. Regina Meredith, an English teacher, was the group's sponsor. The students will use the training to develop an action plan to implement student-oriented prevention activities to keep the school safe and drug-free.

Arlene Cundiff, the conference coordinator, was impressed with the group's enthusiasm. "These young people and their sponsors are wonderful to work with. They are to be commended for their leadership roles in leading the fight against alcohol and other drug abuse by their peers," she said.

In preparation for another possibly bad winter and numerous snow days, Radford High School will adjust the bell schedule to allow for 15 more minutes of school time each day.

According to Principal Buddy Martin, students who choose the optional seven-period day that starts at 7:30 a.m. will not be affected by the schedule changes. Students not participating in the "zero" or activity period will start the home room period at 8:10 a.m. The late bell will ring at 8:15 a.m.

The school hopes to accumulate enough time to compensate for an estimated four or five missed school days.

Montgomery County School Superintendent Herman Bartlett and school board members Roy Vickers, David Moore, Robert Goncz, and Annette Perkins attended the Governor's Conference in Richmond on July 26.

The conference brought together school board members, educators, governing officials and legislators to discuss educational issues that affect Virginia's public schools. The topics discussed included early childhood education, technology, school reform, partnerships, finance and school law.

The New River Community College will offer a Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation course on Saturdays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29. The classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dublin campus.

The course will include a review of the test topics, math drills and an explanation of hints, tips and short cuts to help students cover all test material.

The course fee is $65 plus textbook costs. For more information, call the continuing education office at 674-3607.
