WHEELCHAIR ANGLERS TO GET RAMP TO STREAM

Virginia Tech landscape architecture students will build a wheelchair-accessible trout fishing trail on Big Stony Creek for two weeks this month at Cherokee Flats in Giles County.

It will include a chair access point in the stream itself.

In the past, people with physical impairments were separated from others in using public facilities. That attitude began to change in the mid-1960s.

The U.S. Forest Service is the single largest provider of outdoor recreation opportunities in the nation, and is working toward being the leading provider of totally accessible recreation as well.

One of the most popular activities in Jefferson National Forest is fishing but, until now, little has been done to allow disabled anglers to get access to the sport.
