COAL PRODUCTION RISES IN VIRGINIA

Virginia coal production through July was running nearly 4 percent higher than the 1993 pace. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said 24.3 million tons of coal were produced in Virginia through July, compared with 23.4 million tons during the first seven months of 1993.

The Department of Energy agency said total coal production in the United States through July was 591 million, up 8 percent from 548 million in the same period last year.

Production of bituminous and lignite coal east of the Mississippi was up 6.1 percent, and production in the West was running 10.1 percent ahead of last year. Anthracite production was down 11.7 percent for the year, from 2.4 million to 2.1 million tons.
