SENIORS TO BENEFIT FROM ACTIVITIES AT MALL FAIR

Seniors have two good reasons to go to the New River Valley Mall Community Fair on Saturday. First, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Christiansburg sponsors its ROCKING GRANNIES ROCKATHON from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. RSVP seeks individuals and local businesses to sponsor rockers. Proceeds go into an RSVP scholarship fund. RSVP volunteers donated more than 56,000 hours of community service to Montgomery County last year. To sign up, call 382-5775.

Also, the Senior Athletes of Montgomery County are raffling a HANDMADE QUILT to raise money for those headed for the national Senior Olympics in San Antonio, Tex., next spring. The quilt - "Jacob's Ladder" - is on display during the New River Valley Mall Community Fair. It will be awarded Oct. 22 at the Senior Crafts fair in Christiansburg. Donation is $1. By the way, the group seeks new athletes, 55 or older. Call Sherry Kostric, 382-8173.

Fair hours Saturday are 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. WVVV - Rock 105 - (104.9 FM) plans to broadcast live from the event.

The MS. VIRGINIA SENIOR CITIZEN PAGEANT is Aug. 25-27 at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. The talent competition happens Aug. 26, and the winner is crowned in the pageant finale the following evening.

This is not a beauty pageant, organizers emphasize. The competition includes a personal interview, daytime outfit, evening gown and an impromptu question to answer on stage.
