SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR LEAVING

Roanoke is losing the director of its magnet schools, which have attracted top students and helped reduce racial isolation in city schools.

Anita Tanner is leaving to become executive director of magnet schools in Durham, N.C. She has worked for Roanoke schools for 33 years.

Roanoke has 10 magnet schools that are financed in part with federal funds to promote racial balance in schools through innovative progams to attract students. The city recently was notified it will receive a $3.6 million grant for the William Fleming-William Ruffner magnet center for next year.

Roanoke is one of two urban localities in the nation to receive federal magnet school funding for all four previous funding cycles.

In other personnel changes, the School Board recognized several new and reassigned administrators and principals.

The group included: Michael McIntosh, administrator of the alternative education program; Rebecca Sears, curriculum coordinator of alternative education; Paul McKendrick, principal of Addison Aerospace Magnet School; Gerald McDearmon, principal of Fallon Park Elementary School; Faye Claytor, principal of Forest Park New American Magnet School; Virginia Stuart, principal of Morningside Elementary School; and Carolyn Haley, principal of Round Hill Elementary School.
