AROUND NEW RIVER

Hunter safety CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a hunter safety course on Saturday, Aug. 27, noon-5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 28, 1:30-6:30 p.m. at Hunting Masters on U.S. 460 between Christiansburg and Blacksburg. The course is required for all new hunters seeking to obtain a hunting license for the upcoming hunting season.

Amateur radio

CHRISTIANSBURG - Classes to obtain the new, no-code Technician Class amateur radio license begin Monday, Aug. 22, and continue Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m., for ten weeks at Virginia Ham Radio Supply, 2208 Childress Road.

Bob Cecil, a veteran ham radio operator and former New River Community College electronics teacher, is the instructor. The fee of $49.95 includes the textbook.

License examinations are set for Nov. 5, 9 a.m., at New River Community College, Dublin. To register for the class, call 382-3690.

Literature group

BLACKSBURG - The Literature Group of the American Association of University Women meets Monday, Aug. 29, 6 p.m., for a potluck dinner at the home of Karen Finch, 412 Ridgeview Drive. An overview of English post-colonial literature by J. D. Stahl of the Virginia Tech English Department follows.

The group begins its 21st year by reading Booker Prize-winning novels. The award is given in England to the best post-colonial novel of the year. Call Elizabeth Calvera, 951-3179.
