FOREST SERVICE WORKERS HONORED FOR DEDICATION

BLACKSBURG - Joy Berg, supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest, was one of five forest service professionals recognized at an awards ceremony July 28 at the Blacksburg Ranger Station.

The National Park Service and the Appalachian Trail Conference presented a certificate of appreciation and an official copy of the ATC picture book, "Uncommon Places" by David Muench, to all recipients.

Berg was recognized for her contributions in helping maintain the 2,155-mile Appalachian Trail for 270 miles through the Jefferson National Forest.

She has been forest service supervisor since December 1990 and is the first supervisor to work a full week as a volunteer on one of ATC's seasonal trail crews.

Other recipients include Lou Brossy, district ranger of the Wythe Ranger District for the past 14 years; Steve Sherwood, area ranger for the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area; Don Blackburn, retired land staff officer for 15 years; and David Wagner, landscape architect for the past 17 years.

"When the chips are down and we need support, we can come to these people," said Pam Underhill of the National Park Service's Appalachian Trail project office. "These are people who are dedicated to making the Appalachian Trail a positive experience, and they have done so for years."
