RACING TICKETS ON SALE AT TRACK

Tickets for the four 1995 race weekends at Martinsville Speedway go on sale Monday at 9 a.m. at the track.

Tickets may be purchased for the Winston Cup events, the Hanes 500 on April 23 and the Goody's 500 on Sept. 24, by going to the speedway or calling the ticket office at (703) 956-3151. Tickets for the doubleheader weekends in March and October also will be on sale.

The speedway has approximately 51,000 reserved seats for sale and holds 8,000 grandstand seats for race-day sales.

The Charlotte Hornets' seven-game preseason NBA schedule includes two home dates and an exhibition opener Oct. 14 against Atlanta at East Tennessee State's Memorial Center in Johnson City. Charlotte's two home preseason dates are Oct. 24 against Detroit and Oct. 27 against Dallas.

Scott Buckner and Christopher Denton of Roanoke teamed to win the Senior 2-man 5,000-meter quad speed skating relay at the United States Roller Skating Championship on Tuesday at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln, Neb.

Nicole Gardiner of Radford University has been named to the Big South's preseason all-conference women's basketball team.

The Virginia men's soccer team will begin defense of its NCAA title Sept. 3 when the Cavaliers host Boston University in the Coca-Cola Classic in Charlottesville. Virginia released its 18-game men's soccer schedule Wednesday. It includes six teams that qualified for NCAA postseason play in 1993 and six teams that finished the year ranked in the top 25 in the country.

The Radford women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the Big South this season by the league's coaches and sports information directors. The Highlanders were 15-3 overall 6-1 in the conference last season. The Radford men's team, which was 4-12-3, 3-4-2 last year, was picked to finish seventh.

Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel won both his singles and doubles matches in three sets Wednesday in the U.S. Tennis Association Boys' 14 National Hard Courts tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Hippensteel beat Benjamin Cox of Springlake, Miss., 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and will meet San Francisco's Duke Nguyen in a fourth-round match today at 10 a.m. Hippensteel and Phillip Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., moved into the doubles semifinals by beating Cox and Justin Baker 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5.
