NOT FOR PARENTS ONLY, a nine-week course for parents and any other adults concerned about preserving self-esteem in human relationships, will begin Sept. 27 at Unity of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Road. The course will utilize the principles of Parent Effectiveness Training and will be taught by Lori Engel, a psychologist with the Roanoke County Schools. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.. A donation is requested to cover costs. Call 562-2200 to register.
RIDGEWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH,703 Hemlock Road N.W., will observe its 35th anniversary of founding during the weekend of Sept. 10-11. Several former staff members from out of town are expected. The Saturday night program starting at 7 will include a skit and fellowship period. The following day, at 11a.m., guests will share in worship and a lunch.

THE REV. DAVID MILLER, now on the staff of a Manassas church, will begin his ministry Sept. 1 at First Church of the Brethren. Miller, 33, is a graduate of Bridgewater College and of Andover Newton Theological School in the Boston area. He will succeed the Rev. Michael Chandler, who left in May 1993. Since then, two interim ministers have served the Northwest area congregation.
THE REV. KENNETH B. WRIGHTwill be honored Sunday on his 21st anniversary of coming to the pastorate of First Baptist Church in the Gainsboro neighborhood. The Rev. J.R. Hughes of Bent Mountain Baptist Church will be the guest speaker at 11 a.m. at the church at 310 N. Jefferson St.
THE REV. JOHN E. WALLACE has concluded 41 years of active ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and has retired to his home in Franklin County. A native of Florida, Wallace has been pastor of Belmont Christian Church for the past five years.
He spent much of his career as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force with assignments in England, Vietnam, Turkey, and seven states. He also has served congregations in Florida and Indiana as well as Virginia. He and his wife have four daughters and four grandchildren.
THE SALEM CLOTHING CLOSET, housed in First United Methodist Church, is closed through Sept. 1. Donations of used clothing will not be accepted until then.
Volunteers are needed, however, on Monday mornings to ready garments for the fall season. Call 389-5459.
