FERRUM PLAYER KILLED IN CRASH

Chad Bowman, the starting center on Ferrum College's football team, was killed Wednesday morning in a two-car accident while on vacation in Kitty Hawk, N.C.

Bowman, a native of Grottoes, near Harrisonburg, would have been a junior this season. He was 19.

Bowman earned an honorable mention last year for Academic All-District by the Virginia Sports Information Directors, the only Division III player recognized. He was being touted as an Academic All-American this season as a history major with a 3.8 grade-point average.

Bowman also was a member of Ferrum's Bonner Scholars Program, volunteering 10 hours a week as a tutor at Ferrum Elementary School.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mill Creek Brethern Church in Port Republic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the scholarship fund at Highland Retreat Camp, where Bowman worked as a counselor: Rt.1, Box 121, Bergton, 22811.
