In Pittsburgh, Trent Johnson and Brittney Semones competed in four events each to lead the Virginia swim team on the second day of the four-day Eastern Zone Long Course Championships. Virginia, the three-time defending champion, trails first-place Middle Atlantic 509-487.
Johnson, swimming in the boys' 14-year-old division, was third in the 50-meter freestyle, 25th in the 200 freestyle and also competed on the second-place 400 freestyle relay team and the fourth-place 400 medley relay team. Semones, competing among the 10-year-old girls, was ninth in the 50 butterfly, 11th in the 200 freestyle, 26th in the 100 backstroke and swam on the 10th-place 200 freestyle relay team.
Roanoke Post 3 North dropped a 2-0 decision to Bedford at the American Legion state baseball tournament in Hopewell. Chris Carr gave up both runs and struck out seven for North, which beat the host team 8-1 late Wednesday night in its opener. The Roanoke team plays Poqouson at 1 p.m. today in the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Second-seeded K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke beat Duke Nguyen of San Francisco 6-3, 6-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA boys' 14 national championships at San Antonio, Texas. Hippensteel plays fifth-seeded Andrew Park today. Hippensteel and partner Phillip Nguyen of Pennsylvania will play in the doubles championship on Saturday.
